Editor Messenger : However evident it may appear from this our first letter from Eurus the name we shall be pleased to call our beautiful and thriv ing little town of Eastern Carolina that some deeds here are unpleasant, nevertheless yon must remember this is only one side of life, and that we, too, are not void of enjoyment. Do not think either that we are lauding ourselves too much, but so far as en terprise in farming, merchandising, educational institutions, in fact al most every branch of industry, and eslablishments of all kinds is con cerned, we believe that our town and vicinity are inferior to but few in the land. Among the many other im provements we do not mention is the recent erection of eleven brick build ings which makes us feel a little proud. But tribulation will come, as I said to myself this morning while in the photograph gallery. A true spec imen of the African, not very much unlike negro "doodle," (if you will allow me to use the expression, ap peared on the floor, and said with peculiar air : Is dis bar de place yo take types T I want mice tuck cheap asyo can." Judging from actions, I imagine that his calculations were somewhat upset when he was found receding down the stairway measur ing three steps at a bound while the photographer was "numerously" ! bringing, with repeated intervals, the j broomstick in contact with the woolly j head of the fast disappearing body. ! "I think I can justify myself," said i Tom Wiggins, a fair complected, self-! Eossessed member of the dark race as ; e appeared at the Mayor's quarters Saturday before Officer Warren. He was accused of diminishing the num- ! ber of teeth of a small Mack boy with i a violent blow. Perhaps he was very ; much disappointed when the ofheer, after hearing the evidence, remarked with a natural but grim look : "This manner of extracting teeth appears from circumstances to be somewhat disagreeable to the patient. Besides it was an imposition of human nature to go to so much trouble without getting the consent of the subject; and, as you are practicing such with out being able to show license from a medical institution, we shall dismiss the court on your relieving your pocket of $4 and costs. A physian of Elmira, N. Y., re cently visited Jonathan Bass, of Cam bria, Niagara county, whose case is believed to be without a parallel in medical records. Mr. Bass is 55 years of age. In the summer of 1848 he was seized with a sharp pain in the bot tom of his right foot. No cause for it could be discovered. The foot and leg became greatly swolen and during the next nine years, all the joints in his body became slowly anchylosed, or grown into solid bone. In 1857 he was placed on an invalid's bed and has never been removed from it. So completely consolidated are all his joints, including the spine, that he may be lifted by the placing of a hand under his head and one under his heels, his weight being but 75 pounds. The bones of the fingers of the right hand, of the entire left hand and of the toes of both feet have been entirely absorbed, and the flesh of the fingers and toes hangs down like fringe. Mr. Bass' jaws are tightly locked, but he manages to eat the heartiest meals without mastication and without suffering inconvenience. Pork and other meat is cu,t in thin strips, which he draws into his mouth by sucking through the narrow open ing between his upper and lower teeth. He eats the fatiest meat. Since 18G9 he has beeu totally blind. His heart is five inches lower than the usual position of that organ, but is perfectly sound, as are all of the invalid's vital parts. The nails on his fingers have grown to nearly a foot in length.' Mr. Bass is a man of more than average intelligence, and keeps himself posted on all questions of the day. lie converses with ease, and is lively and cheerful. His con stitutional health is so good that pii3'sicians agree that he will live be yond the allotted time of the most active man. ADVICE TO MOTHERS.
