mother, friend, neighbor, relative
and mistress of slaves her example
and life will long remain a lesson
and a pattern to be imitated. She lived
for years on a fine estate on .Haw river,
where she dispensed a geuerousand ele
gant hospitality to the many friends of
her distinguished husband, and to stran
gers who passed along the great thoro
ughfare upon which she lived. She was
a devout cliti -tian and member of the
Episcopal church and did not show her
religion by ormal observances, v ,but in
private devotion. No fond husband
ever had a more devoted wife. No
children a more affectionate, provident
mother. No slave a kinder mistress

and no poor ueighber a more charitable
friend. Her like and life will not be

28th last month, the Grangers the

A boy named Johnson, as we learn,
about twelve years old, got into a quar

ly thereafter. Tne youthful fratricide
is in Salisbury jail, bail having been re
fused.
The water question is agitating the
people ef Raleigh. They want a supply
of water, other liquids they have. A
Mr. Allen of Baltimore enlightened a
recent meeting upon the subject. We
are sf rry for any one in want of water,
and earnestly hope the demand of Ral
eigh may be supplied.
Enoch Nichols, at the recent term of
New Hanover Superior Court candidly
expressed the opinion that the jut y was
a set of d—d rascals. This was done in
the hearing of the jury as it passed to
the jury room. Judge McKoy imposed
a fine ot fifty dollars upon the gentleman
of candor, or thirty days imprisonment
at his election.
