Every person in Alamance County who intends to vote and work for the democratic ticket in the election to be held in Nov ember, 1010, is hereby earnestly invited to attend the Democratic Mass Convention, which is called to assemble in the court house at Graham, N. C, at 11 o'clock A. M. on Saturday, September -ira 1!10, for the purpose of nominat ing a member for the House of Representatives, and the several county officers who will conduct our rmblic affairs for the next Mr two years. By order of the County Demo cratic Executive Committee. F. L. Williamson, Ch'm'n. O. F. Crowson, Sec'y. The political supremacy of Speak er Cannon is doomed. His party will no longer stand for him. But the old man will die game. Mr. Roosevelt has been sat upon in New York. The Republican State executive committee of New York has refused to name him for tflmnorarv chairman of the State L j convention. It's a bitter dose to many Republi cans that Mary Ann Butler has tak en hold of the reins of tneir party It is doubtful if a single one enjoys the situation. They don't like him, but it seems they cau't help them selves in their present dilemma. Mr. Roosevelt is flocking with the insurcenl Republicans. What effect this will have on the friend ship between him and Mr. Taft has not yet developed. The former's temperament is of that character which would naturally incline him to the insurgents; In a railroad wreck at Raleigh last Thursday night an engineer and fireman lost their lives. It is said to have occurred on account of the daring negligence of the yard engi neor. Only a few days before a colored excursion was run into in the passenger station and two were kill ed. This, too, was due to negli gence on the part of some one. Throughout the country the Re publicans are rather tame. They have no big hopes to lean upon in the campaign, not even hoping to hold their own in the House of Con gress. They will use every effort to hold legislatures in States where Senators are to be chosen the com ing year, in order that th ey may not lose their hold on the Senate. On last Saturday at Greensboro the Republicans placed in nomi nation for Congress Mr. Darid H. Blair of Winston-Salem. He is the opponent of Ifaj. Chaa. M. Sted man, the Democratic nominee. Ifaj. 'Stedman will have easy sailing and will roll spa majority of at least lour thousand, and maybe a thou sand mors. Citizenship and Public Health. Responsibility for Public Health Our Greatest Civic Responsibility. The essentsal difference be tweon the citizen and the savage is the expression in his daily routine by the former of the principle, "No man livcth unto himsolf." The biblical axiom U the basis of civilization, because it expresses a relation that law donues and controls. It natural ly follows that tlw clearer our ii.en!;'l perception, the more dis t nctly will we recognize the many and subtile bonds that unite onr fortunes or our fates into a w-b oi' weal or woo. II uov.lcJgc gives acuteness of mental vision, and, therefore, it is knowledge that opens the gates of a higher civili zation and gives to him who de sires the opportunity to become a better citizen. The relation of one man's prop erty to another's is easily recog nized, and is firmly established upon universally accepted princi ples of civil law. The relation of one man's life to another's has on ly within the last half century been established upon principles of natural laV. But, as yet, the knowledge of these natural laws has not been widely enough dis sominated to produce sufficient public sentiment to weld them in to our statutes. Man's greatest civic obligation is to the public health. This sounds like the exaggeration of an enthusiast. Nevertheless, it rests upon those primary and fundamental principles of law that for over four thousand years have been the basis of civiliza tion. Writ in tables of stone by the Supreme Judge Himself, these legal priniciples are so compre hensive as to embrace man's every possible relation: His relation to the Court of Heaven ; his rela tion to the court of the home, and his relation to the court of man. But note, and note carefully, that the first of the five rules govern ing man's relation to man is the law protecting life. First, not by haphazard, but first by Omnia cient design, because it is just as fundamental to the last four of these five laws as life is funda- mental to chastity, property, re putation, and neighborly comfort. Note further, that "Thou shall not kill" carries no provisions limiting its application to the 5,000 deaths occurring annually in the United Stated through wil ful acts of commission, and ex eluding the 600,000 deaths an nually occuring in oar country by an act of passive omission. Every citizen who does not take a seri ous interest in the public health of his or her community is a part isan to this criminal destruction of life. Like Lady Macbeth dip ping her bloody hands in water, we say, "Out! damned spot," but it will not oat, for all the real and feigned ignorance and indiffer ence into which we submerge onr individual and public consciences, And now, lastly, how can the conscious citizen this does not include everybody discharge this obligation? ne can easily Inform himself, with a total amount of reading of not over ten hours, of tbe'principal facts which will enable one to take an active and intelligent part in this work. He can be supplied, without cost, with this literature by writing the Secretary of the State Board of Health at Raleigh to place his or her name on the mailing list for the monthly Bulletin. Ha can read articles on this subject ap pearing in this paper monthly. He can rote for aldermen, county commissioners, and legislators who are informed in regard to this Important problem. ." t The political pot in Alamance In warming up. Several candidates - have announced they will stand for nomination at the Democratic con vention. OI coarse there are not omees nougu to give on to each of the aspirants, and some will be dis . appointed, bat that is what always , happens , Let each one make op his " mind that he is not the only pebble ' on the beach and that he may be l taken or left and that he will abide ! ; the verdict of the convention.
