The Democrats of Alamance will meet in convention Saturday to nominate candidates for the various county offices. A large attendance is looked for. Let every Democrat who can do so como. In the matter of the Clark -Godwin contest in the Sixth Congressional District, the State Democratic Execu tive Committee has decided that neither has been regularly nominat ed, and a general voting primary was ordered held not latter than Sept. 15th. lion. Allowing 140 ears of the corn to the bushel, this will give him a yield of 208 bushels. The field is just one acre in size and was sur veyed for the purpose of entering the corn growing contest. Austin, who had made his home in Greensboro a short time, climbed on -top of a passen ger train in that city Saturday Afternoon for the purpose of "beating" his way oat of town. Narrow Escape from Death by Young Lady. While Miss Mary Pierce and Miss Susie Williams, of Reidsville, were strolling with some children along the public road at Pelham, Caswell county, last Tuesday evening, says the Reidsville Weekly, they were fired on by a man walking along the railroad, which parallels the public road at that point, and the ball passed through Miss Williams' hair, sing- ng the hair. The young woman fled to the home of Mrs. Fierce, near at hand, and gave the alarm. Search was at once made but tho man was not found. It is believed he was a tramp and the reason for the shooting, which occurred about f o'clock 4n the evening, is only conjecture. Friday, the 27th, was the 19th 'iniversary of the Bostian bridge wreck, in which 22 persons were killed. The 27th that year 1891 fell on Thursday and the wreck occurred about 2 o'clock in the morning. Tomorrow night, Aug. 31st. is the 24th anniversary of the earthquake which shook up things hereabouts in August 1880 The 31st of the month that year fell on Tuesday. Older residents vividly recall both these inci dents. McManua coveted his neighbor's wife and this was his undoing. Houston is in jail.' ' Mocks rille Record: Ceph. A special from Wilson to the Raleigh News and Observer say that near Saratoga, Wilson coun tv, Thursday evening, Albert Galloway struck his father, Jas, Galloway, over the head with a stick. W Watts, in No. 8 township, Cabar rus county, Sunday night a week, and the hay stack ignited the barn. The building and a lot of forage were burned. The live stock, farming implements, etc., were saved. Loss about $500, with 1100 insurance. The contest for the location of the shops of the Carolina and Northwestern railroad is about over. It Is stated they will be located at either Gastonia or Lincoln ton. The temporary shops have been at Lincolnton since the shops at Chester, S. C, were burn ed some weeks ago. J. S. Harris a farmer living about two mflee from Elk in, was severely injured Friday by a Jer- rey bull belonging to Capt Roth. Harris was hauling wood from a pasture where the beast was graz ing when it attacked him and tore a gash.about 8 inches long in his thigh.
