The colored people of the coanty held their second annual educational rally on last Saturday in the court house. There was a good repre sentation present, the court house being full. They had on exhibition some of their work which was a credit to the colored teachers of the county. This work consisted large ly of drawing, writing, cooking and sewing, baskets and chair caning. Two years ago this kind of work was introduced into the colored schools and they are making a good begin ning along the line of useful arts and science. The address of the day was made by one of their own race, Rev. J. 8. Walker of the First Presbyterian church, colored, of Greenboro, who is an Alamance boy. His address was considered the product of a master and his advice good and wholesome. He encouraged the col ored people to aid themselves, saying that the making of a people must be done largely by themselves and their own endeavor. The crowd was orderly and well behaved. Here is a story of severe suffer ing that many people go through day by day without relief. But why endure it? Read Mr. Garrett's words and you will realize that much suffering does not have to be endured. Proof of merit like the following is what you have been lloking for. W. W. Garrett propr., restau rant, South Main St., Graham, N. C., says: "About a year ago I had a bad attack of kldnenr colic. I suffered severely. I thought my thought my back was 'broken and , I was laid up for days at a time. I was unable to help myself. My , kidneys were weak and caused me J a lot of trouble. Doan's Kidney, Pills did more for me than anything I have ever taken. They strenjsfn ened my back and my kldnevs!2ct ed properly. Victor Lightbourne, the Preacher and the Preaching. When it was announced a few weeks ago by Rev. J. F. Morgan, Pastor of the Graham Christian church that he would have Rev. Victor Lightbourne to conduct a series of evangelistic services, few, if any, here dreamed what was in store for the town and community, for none here had seen and heard him. Mr. Lightbourne is a native of Dover, Del., and the son of a lead ing minister of the Christian church of that city. Comparatively, he is a young man, and of moat pleas ing personality. From his conver sion, a year and a half ago he has been preaching. Before he was a man of the world. When he took up the cross, the change in his life was complete—a perfect revolu tion. A His first service was at the Chris tian church Thursday night, and since he has preached twice a day, in the afternoon and at night. At his first services the congregation was not large, but it has grown on each succeeding day. Monday night it Was seen that larger accommo dations must be secured for tha growing attendance, and the large court room was secured, and now it is packed every night with eager listeners, who come from the near by towns and the country around. Preacherß and members of all the churches come and take part in the services—a revival unhampor ed by denominational lines. He paints pictures so vividly, and at times with such passionate elo quence that l)>s congrega'ion sits in breathless silence. And his dis courses are so full of that. applica ble to one's self that one nas no time for fitting it to the life or conduct of another. At each ser vice he gives everyone something to take home to ponder over, that will not soon fade away. Not only is he generously! endow ed in the use of press his thoughts, but he fasci nates and charms his congregation with exquisitely sweet music , upon the violin which he wields with the hand of a master. And we would not fail to mention Mrs. Light- 1 bourne, who is here with her hus band. She sings beautifully, swaat ly, touchingly and soulfully. Now that Mr. and Mrs. Light bourne have made their home at Elon College, it "is hoped perma nently, the people of this section | will look forward to hearing him again. This series of services is expect- ' ed to close Sunday night, when Mr. ■ Lightbourne will go away to meet other engangements. Resolutions by the'M. E. Church Aid' Society. Whereas, the Heavenly Father in ! His wisdom has seen ft to remove by death Mrs. Mary Coble, Whereas, she was a devoted wife and mother, a faithful mem ber of our church and Aid Society, and a true nad loyal christian, therefore Kesolved, that we deeply deplore her untimely death and th? great loss we have sustained as a friend arid co-worker in the cause of Christ. That we extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved husband and daughter, and assure them of "the consolation in the fact that her life was filled with noble deeds and her influence still lives to bless others. That we would commend them to the great comforter of hearts, for even— "He makes the rose the object of His care. He guides the eagle through the boundless air, and surely He will never fail those who trust Him. That a copy of these resolutions b® sent to the family, one be spread on our minutes, and one be sent to our paper for publication. MISS FANNIE SPOON, ERNEST THOMPSON, W. B. OREEN, Committee.
