Jarvis had been in failing health, but recently he hid been better. He grew worse and the end came at 9 o'clock Thursday night. The interment was at Greenville Sun day. His passing ends the career of one of the most distinguished men the Stnte has ever borne. He •was Confederate soldier, legislator Lieutenant-Governor, Governor, f. S. Senator and Minister to Brazil He adorned every station occupied by him and rendered able service. He won Justly the name "Grand Old Man". Ho was born at Jarvis burg, Currituck county, January 18th ,1836. His widow survives him. COMMUTED, The trial of Leo M. Frank for the murder of Mary Phagan. a 14- year-old girl employe of an Atlanta pencil factory of which Frank wap superintendent, has been one of the most spectacular ever witnessedMn the. South. For more than » year and a half the case has been fought constantly in the courts through the State courts up to the Supreme Court of the United States. Finally the case narrowed down to the Governor of Georgia, Gov. Siaton. who commuted the death sentence to life impris onment Ho was to have been hanged Tuesday. The United States Supreme Court has refused to review the action of the Sixth Circtttt Court of Ap peals in reversing the'conviction of tl)e National Cash Register officials of violations of the Sherman law. Government officials regard this case as the most important insti tuted under the criminal section of the anti-trust law.
