THE GLEANE ? - ? i1 ISSUED KVEKY THCUSDAI. ) J. D. KERNODLE, Editor. J $1.00 A YEAR. IN ADVANCE. 1 Entered at ttie i^M-offlce at Graham. ] N. 0., as second-class matter- 1 GRAHAM, N. C., DEC. 8, 1917. 1 -- - i Clias. E. Hughes says he is not a candidate and will not accept i the nomination for the president, i Mr. Coolidge urges his party to find another candidate, but he has not said that he would not be drafted. There are others, how ever, in a receptive mood. ?Congress, that is the Senate, started olf at its convening .Mon day like it quit last March?with the contests of Smith and Vare for seats. It is a continued story whose end should come by and by. President Coolidge does not think a cut of more than$225,000, 000 in taxes can be safely made. Not, if anything is to be done for flood control of the Mississippi. And as to farm relief there is given little dope. Thinning Timber. , IIow do you cut your wood gup ply? Do you follow the usual prac tice of clearing a strip of land each year, or are you beginning to work your timber as a farm crop by thin ning same? We are approaching the season , for getting up our supply of wood for the next year. We don't need to clear laud, we have a surplus of open land now. Why not make a start this year in the practice of thinning timber? You can expect anywhere from 5 to 15 colds of fire ?wood from each acre you thin. Then the good straight, thrifty trees left will have an opportunity of gTowing rapidly into high class tim ber. Thus, you will have another money crop growing on every farm. In thinning timber you j ust i Mow nature's plan and advice. You it out all dead, crippled, diseased, over-crowded trees, leaving ? strong, straight, thrifty trees to : i into high class timber. You ft ? j the same idea that you woul i thinning corn or chopping cotton. The average farmer in this con ; uses from 15 to 18 cords of fuel j wood, on the farm, each year.
