GRAHAM. N. 0., MAR. 8, 1928.
MAJ. STEDMAN.
Once more, the venerable and
esteemed Maj. Charles Manly
Stedman announces that he will
be a candidate for the Democratic
nomination for Congress to repre
sent the "Imperial Fifth." That
done, he says he will not again
be a caudidate, bnt will volun
tarily stand aside. Maj. Stedman
has been highly honored by the
Fifth in many successive elec
tions. but not more so than the
Fifth has been by having so dis
tinguished a representative.
In the U. S. Congress there is
no inort distinguished and unique
figure. In point of service his
years are among the longest; In
age, he is among, if not the old
est; he is the only veterau of the
Civil War in that august body
from North or South?and there
-.rill never be another; in the love
and esteem of his fellows, no one
stands so high as he with bis po
litical friends and foes.
That the Fifth will be pleased
to return hi/to this year again,
goes without saying.
1 Lieut.-Gor. J. Elmer Long re
cently gave it out that he would
be a candidate to succeed Maj.
Stedman, but conditioned his can
didacy upon Maj. Stedman not
being a candidate. Just a day or
two ago, upon learning that the
Major would again be a caudidate
Mr. Long declared himself defi
nitely out of the running, and he
will give his aid and support to
bis venerable and distinguished
friend and bide his time. His
courtesy and unselfishness will
not be forgotten by Maj. Sted
man's friends two years hence.
