GRAHAM, N. 0., MAY 3, 1928.
THE STRAW VOTE.
The Charlotte Observer's ;>ol'
for president, covering the month
of April, closed with Sunday last.'
The Democratic vote showed a
total of G,98C, of which Smith re
ceived 4*250, McAdoo 1504, Kee<l
317, McLean 229 and for the other
dozen or more 020. Smith's vote
was a little less than 61 percent
of the entire vote.
The Republican stood tot
Hoover 653, Coolidge 157, Lowdeu
150, and for the half dozen or
more'others 85, Hoover receiving
slightly more than 02 percent of
the total.
Whether the poll tells the tale
or not, it shows how several
thousand are thinking ou the
presidential choice.
, Tiie GlkanVE in this issue- is
, carrying the pictured of two of the
Democratic candidates for Com
missioner of Labor and Printing.
' M. L. Shipmau, formerly of Hen
dereonvllle, now of Kaleigh, after
holding the office for several
terms, was defeated by a narrow
margin four years ago in the pri
mary for a renominatioii. lie has
the advantage of being the beet
qualified of all the candidates; and
the disadvantage of being out try
ing "a come-back." O.J. Peterson
of Pittsboro is out. He was a
candidate four years ago, but lost
in the primary. He gained the
advantage of a wide acquaint
anceship that is now to his ad
vantage, and he is stronger now
than then. Both these are news
paper men. Mr. Urist, present
incumbent, is also a candidate.
