Speakiug of votiug for Gov. A1
Smith, a Democrat, whoha<l voted
the ticket straight for 50 years,
said not a word about Smith's
views ou the Volstead act, but
that he could not vote for a Cath
olic. That was a statement square
from the shoulder. He had been
told from the pulpit and pew, al]
his life, that Catholicism was
baneful and undesirable, danger
ous to American civil and relig
ious liberty.
The thought has been expressed
that there is a shadow of insin
cerity in the issue promulgated
by some leading clergymen against
the candidacy of Gov. Smith. Is
it his views on the Volstead act,
or is it under cover of these that
he is being fought on account of
his cnurch relationship? In either
case candor and sincerity should
prevail. Men ought to be true to
themselves, then, as a great writer
has said, "it will follow as the
night The day that thou canst be
false to no man."
Lflf t it rather strange that,
until nominated for president and
a few weeks preceding that
event, the public had heard little
or nothing of Gov. Smith's unsav
ory record? He had been in
public life for 25 years and four
times elected Governor of the
great State of New York, yet this
moral leper (?), this bad man, this
totally unfit person for Chief
Executive, had escaped the
searching eye of adverse criticism,
so well had he camouflaged his
his official conduct.
Running for president is a big
financial job for somebody. If
the candidate had to pay all the
expenses himself, he would have
to be several times a millionaire.
There are legitimate expenses
that have to be met, but there is
much other speuding that cannot i
be classified as legitimate. A dis-I
patch from Washington states
that the Republican managers
estimate that 94,000,000 will bo
required to finance their cam
paign, while the Democratic
managers estimate theirs will re
quire between $3,000,000 and $3,
600,000. There can hardly be a
doubt but that some of it will be
used buying votes outright.
From an investment of $63.60
for 9 ewes and one ram, G. F.
Bateman of Paaqnotank county
sold $16 worth of lambs and $ 18
worth of wool this spring. He
saved four lambs valued at $20
to add to his original flock.
The Kraft Cheese company is
opening a branch plant in Ashe
county thus helping to stimulate
greater interest in dairy cattle in
that section.

Was Great Success.
Five Women Honored a? Matter Farm
Humemakera.
Despite a lower attendance than
in previous years, the 2<ith au
uual State Farmers' and Farm
Women's convention held at State
College dnring the week of July
23 was a great success ^
Total registration for rooms
was about 300 below that for last
summer due largely to delayed
crops, the tobacco harvest and
low prices for early truck crops
iu eastern Carolina. However, on
Thursday, a few over 1,000 per
sons had registered and huudreds
of others had driven in for some
part of,the program and did uot
desire rooms. The men were
greatly outnumbered by the rural
wdnien, many of whom left their
husbands at home with the crops
and children, so that advantage
might be taken of the annual
short coarse for farm wouieu
which was a part of Hie conveu
tiou exercises this year.
In fact, some of the main feat
ures of the program were arrang
ed for ladies. Five were honored
with the title of Master Farm
Homemaker. These were Mrs!
J. E. Corriher of China Grove;
Mrs. W. B. Lamb, Garland; Mrs.
A. R. Poyner, Moyock; Mrs. \V.
T. Whitsett, Whitsett, and Mrs.
W. D. Graham, Mt. Ulla. Four
others were awarded certificates
for haviug attended four short
courses. These were Mrs. Henry
Middleton of Waasaw; Mrs. S. B.
Nash, Frankliutou; Mrs. Martha
Jackson, Cooper, and Mrs. C. M.
Rhodes, Zebnlon.
Excellent programs were pro
vided in each of the sectional
meetings. The general meetings
held each day at eleven o'clock
carried the principal addresses of
the convention. Questions per
taining to all phases of farm life
were discussed from feeding
children to forming state organi
zations of farmers. The program
was almost entirely a made-in
Carolina affair. Only one person
from outside of the State was in
vited to speak. The program
was also featured by the larger
number of practical farmers And
farm women having part in the
proceedings than in past years.
Corta Sells High To Dairy Com.
It is QDQSual for a farmer to
get $4.46 a bushel for his corn in
North Carolina bat there is a way
to do it and Tom Morrow of Ire
dell county has learned' the
method. Grind it into meal and
feed the meal along with other
home grown grains to dairy cattle.
"It takes good eows on a good
pasture to pay such returns but
the records kept on Mr. Morrow's
herd by the tester of the Iredell
Cowtesting Association show this
to be a fact," says John A. Arey,
dairy extension specialist at State
College. "An individual record
is kept of every coir in Mr. Mor
row's herd. During May, the
eleven cows composing this herd,
produced 311.3 pounds of butter
fat which sold for 42 cents a
pound and brought in f 130.75.
The skimmilk left on the farm
after the cream was sold had a
feed value of $29.57, making the
total income amount to $160.32."
Mr. Arey states that these 11
cows were fed 2,269 pounds of a
home-grown grain mixture made
by mixing together 200 pounds of
corn meal, 100 pounds of cotton
seed meal and 100 pounds of
crushed oats, which was valued
at $46 a ton or $22.19 for the
amount fed. The animals also
consumed oat stra* value.! at
$6.80 and were grazed on a grass
and clover pasture for which a
charge of $2 per head was inade.
The total feed bill wnsthns $80.9!),
leaving a net income of $79.33.
On this basis, states Mr. Arey,
the cows paid $9.21 each for their
pasture. The cows consumed
" 23.6 bushels of corn fn the form
' of meal and allowing ail charges
for the feedstuffs, the animals
1 paid $4.46 a bushel for the corn.
! This does not take into account
the manure left on the place.
Therefore, slates Mr. Arey, the
. man who has cows above the
I average, a good pasture and will
grow his grain and hay mixtures
' at home can make money selling
cream. The dairy cow, in his
? opinion, is one of the very best
markets for the surplus feedstuffs
produced on the average farm.

overooma some of the bad effects
? of too much rain in Martin county.

Bern firemen are making exten
sive plans for the forty-first
annual state firemeu's convention
and tournament here during the
week of August G to be the best
in the history of the organization.
Over 1500 firemen are expected
from the 125 towns.
Prizes aggregating $1,500 will
be offered to the wiuners in the
annual truck and reel races to be 1
held here Thursday, August 9. 1
Prizes of $1,000 in cash, a gold ,
cup and four silver cups will be
given in the motor boat races
August 10 and 11, as closing
features of the convention.
Outboard motor races will be
held Friday and free-for-all boat
races will be staged Saturday on
Trent River at the Country Club.
They will be held under the
auspices of the American Power
Boat Association and promise to
be outstanding racing events of
the south for the year. Entries
will come from a wide territory
betwten Miami and Detroit.
A state beauty queen, "Miss
North Carolina," will be chosen
during the convention from com
petitors selected by the different
towns in the state. A coronation
ball will be heldWednesday night,
August 8. The annual firemen's
ball will take-place Thursday
night at the Banner Warehouse
here. Two street dances will also
be given during the week. A
parade will be arranged for Wed
nesday afternoon, with floats
entered by mauy local business
firms and civic organizations.
Lunch Wednesday at Grantham
beach, with water sports there, a
baseball game the same afternoon
and fireworks that night over
Neuse River will be additional
entertainment features of the
convention.

sessions Tuesday morning, Tues
day afternoon and Weduesday
raorning at the courthouse will
be made by Sherwood Brockwell,
N. C. Fire Marshall; Dan C.Boney,
Insurance Commissioner^ and E.
C. Shoen, of Atlanta, Supervisor
of the Atlanta Fire Tnderwriters.
Memorial services for firemen who
have died during the year will be
held Tuesday evening by Rev. J.
A. Vache at Christ Episcopal
Church.
Registrations of delegates will
begin at 9;30 Monday morning,
August 6, at the Gastou Hotel.
Addresses of welcome at the
opening session Tuesday morning
will be made by former Mayor
Edward Clark for that city; John
H. Parker, president, for the
Chamber of Commerce, and D. L.
Ward, Jr., for the local firemen.
The response will be by Joe
Kesler of Salisbury. The invoca
tion will he asked by T. A. Green,
of this city, first president of the
State Firemen's Association- and
for eleven years its treasurer.
Present officers of the organiza
tion are as follows: A. L. Duckett
of Ashevitle, president; R. C.
Whitley of New Bern, vice-presi
dent; John L. Miller of Concord,
secretary; Charles S. Snibben of
Wilmington, treasurer; a n d
Charles C. Hasris of 'Rocky Mount,

Miles Brite of Pasquotank
county has recently purchased 141
purebred Hampshire ewes and a
ram. He intends to prodnce
breeding stock for the sheep
growers of his community.
Farmers of Chowan county will
ship 20 cars of fm hogs eoopera
tively this fall.

Club Short Course Nov In Session.
With an expected attendance of
between 800 and 1,000 farm boys
and girls, the annual state 4-11
club short course held at State
Course during the week of July
30 to Augutt 4 will likely be one
of the principal farm events in
North Carolina this year.
"Our four-H clubs are better
organized in all parts of North
Carolina than ever before," says
L. R. Harrill, club agent. "The
program for our annual state en
campment has been in the course
of preparation for some weeks
and we have a balanced meeting
in which play and recreation will
take an important place along
with tbe courses of instruction.
Kor the b<jys we shall start the
day with <a swim at 6:30 o'clock
each morning. Then after break
fast, the young men will go to
their classes in poultry, livestock,
farm shops and field crops. Games,
sightseeing, rest and recreation
will be the program for the after-1
noons."
Miss Maude E. Wallace, iu
charge of the girls club work, has
arranged courses iu food and
health, clothing, room improve
ment, recreation, poultry and
culture. House mothers who
will have charge of the girls dur
iug the week are Misses Mattie
Lee Cooley, Ethel Nice and Daisy
Caldwell and Mrs. Sabrie Wil
liams Reid. Several of the home
agents have been selected to aid
in the teaching work also. Miss
Ella Gardner of Washington, D.
C., will have the courses in recre
ation for the girls and Miss Fan
nie Buchanan of a leading talking
machine company will teach
music appreciation.
The young folks will need little I
spending money during the week.

heard the conversation drift to the

that havb been robbed," Insisted Mrs.

"There won't be so much of that In
the future as In the past," Aunt
Emmy said. "Women have been easy
I to victimize because they knew so lit
tle about money affairs, but now they
are realizing this danger more and
more and are taking advantage of the
financial advice departments their
hankers have set up for them. One
thing that has led to women's finan
cial undoing Is their natural love of
pretty things. This trait often leads

speculations to get money quickly.
Once a woman sets her heart on a
thing she can't wait until It is hers."
"But If women didn't buy things,
there wouldn't be any business," spoke
up Molly. "Women are the natural
spenders of the family, Dad says."
"Yes, but they would have more to
spend if they'd go a little slower,"
replied Aunt Emmy. "Every time 1
see a woman falling for some silly
get-rich-quick scheme I think of the
nice things she could buy with the
money she is going to lose. If they'd
go slower?they'd get farther."
"From what I know of the Slade
girls," Molly began?but Just then the
Slade girls themselves came hi.
"We're so sorry to be late," they
apologized, "but we have been having
our first lesson In finance down at the
Trust Company. They STe going to
give us quite a lot of time and explain
all the things we ought to know about
money to keep us out of financial
trouble."
'Well, my dears, you are going to
the right school," said Aunt Emmy.
"It every woman would do that there'd
be less trouble and more pretty things
for all of them."
Saves Soil Fertility
By Terracing Fields.

stable manure alone is a heavy
expense, on a nursery farm, es
pecially when much of the pur
chased fertility is lost through
soil erosion.
"So the Howard-Hickory Nurs
ery of Catawba county began to
build a complete system of ter
races and is now controlling
erosion through the use of the
Uangum terrace," says A. J.
Hoi man, agricultural engineer at
State College. "This nursery
farm is located on rolling land
which makes the erosion problem
more serious. In the past, the
company has attempted to main
tain the fertility ,of its farm by
using commercial fertilizers,
growing green manure crops and
applying stable compost. The
Lannual bill for stable manure
j alone has amounted to approxi
mately $3,0(0. Such attention to
soil fertility is important in the
production of good nursery stock.
Mr. Holman states that O. Joe
Howard, secretary and treasurer
of the nursery company, makes
the statement that his results

company plans to continue build
ing and maintaining terraces
nntil -erosion on ail parts of the
Hickory farm is controlled. On
newly terraced fields, the first
setting of nnrsery stock is planted
in curved rows conforming to th e
contour of the land and the natur
al curves of the terraces. This is
done that the terraces may settle
properly and become very firm.
Once the terraces are well set,
later plantings will disregard
terrace lines and straight row's
run over the terraces.
Mr. Howard also stated that
even when there is no erosion, it^
is difficult to maintain soil fertili
ty doe to the *fact that nursery
stock requires a fertile soil and
second, about every four years a
quantity of soil is removed And
shipped with the plants. When
erosion also takes away some of
this most fertfle soil, as often oc
curs on rolling land not properly
terraced, the problem is greatly
intensified.
