THE GLEANER GRAHAM, N. C., SEPT. 20,1945 ISSUED EVERT THURSDAY J. D. KERNODLE, JR., Manager Entered at the Pietofflce at Graham. N. C.. aa eecc nd-deee matter. RAIN! FLOOD! Well! We have had Rain! And from last Thursday 'til | Tuesday it really rained. Some reports show that more than nine inches of water fell during that time, enough to swell all the streams in the county to a new high flood mark. It reached a higher mark than did the flood of 1908, as that is the date remem bered here as the flood year. In many places in the county work was suspended on Tuescfey because of flood conditions. Some of the county schools did not open because it was impossible for the children and teachers to get there. Roads were covered at places to the extent fhat detours were nec cessary in order that people might reach their destinations. The most of us here in Ala mance have only read about flood ed areas, but now, even the youngsters will well remember that it ia possible to see a great Dart of the or bottomlands, covered with Water in this county, which is sdiM 400 feet above the sea level, and hilly. The damage to the farm crops and property oould not be mea sured in dollars and cents. All low land crops were either ruined or washed away? That means their work was lost and their crops are gone. The numerous mills on the streams in the county wens dam aged. Those that were operated by power had no power, so could not run. But Alamance count} is quite fortunate when compared with some of the Eastern counties In the state. The waters from Haw River, Alamance creek and the other streams in the county help ed to swell the rivers, they help to form, as they head east for the ocean. P. T. A. Holds First Meeting Of Yanr Last Thursday cvenipg the Parent-Teacher Association held its first meeting of the.year in the school auditorium with the president, Morris Burke, presid ing. Following a programs of songs, Mr. Burke read a message from Mrs. E. N. Powell,, presi dent of the N. C. Congress of Parents and Teachers, which stated that the theme for' the year's work would be "Together We Build." Attendance banners went to Miss Lala Browning's first grade; Mrs. James John ston's combined sixth and sev enth grade; and to Mitf Hairnet's room in high school An informal social hour fol lowed the meeting, with Mrs. Wm. deR. Scott, social chairman, in charge, assisted by Mrs. Wal ter E. Bason. Faculty members were presented by Mrs. Joe Okey. Punch and wafer* were sensed by Mrs. Tom Zachary and Mrs. Ben Lee.
