THEGLEANEK GRAHAM, N. C., JAN. 3. 1946 ISSUED BVEl.T THURSDAY J. It. KERiNOULE, JR., Manager $.1 00 A YEAR IN ADVANCE Ei ared at the Ptetofflce at Graham, N. C.. aa secc nd-claaa matter. > LOOKING r AHEAD n GEORGE S. BENSON W Pic tide *t?HiriiKf CtlUft B Suref. Jrlitut Waiting? A farmer friend of mine, accom panied by imall son, took his well used truck and drove over the river to the county seat on a recent wet Saturday. He did the week's shop ping, treated the boy to a "western" and started home; but not The road was under rising water on both sides of the bridge. Returning to town he engaged a night's lodging and tried to telephone home. Service on his party line had grown steadily worse since Pearl Harbor, especially on rainy days. Now the instrument at his ear crack led like cold breakfast food and the ringing signal suggested Central America. He feared the worst. Strangers menaced him, wanting something?the telephone maybe. At last the operator cut in with her impersonal "Waiting?" ? and the farmer exploded. Congressmen Likewise Most people have had such experi ences. They seem to overtake us easily when we're waiting for advice from home. Congressmen in Wash ington know the feeling well, I am told. They, most of all public serv ants, want to hear from home. They don't consider themselves rulers, merely units out of far-away com munities, hand-picked to represent their neighbors who elected them. , Most of our legislators are com petent and eloquent; handle their work well, but they want to be faith ful representatives. Not pretending to know all the answers, they try earnestly to get word from thee elec torate. Pressure groups menace them, wanting something ? their votes maybe. Their deliberations are belittled by frantic executives saying "Waiting! What's the de lav?" What's Your Pleasure? What do you think about paying $25 a week (or 26 weeka to Tom, Dick and Harry? Do you (avor 1 America's helping the Russians build bigger and better atomic bombs? How do you (eel on the subject o( compulsory military training? Do you believe Congress should guaran tee government jobs (or all unem ployed? Your representative would really like to know your wishes in these matters. Hon. Carter Manasco and a score more congressmen recently listened to testimony (or more than 30 days on the question ot guaranteed jobs. They invited every citizen with an idea on the subject to come and tes tify and etpeciallt urged many to appear. They were most liberal with time (or preparation and time to testify. The House Committee on Executive Expenditures deserved much credit and took plenty of panning (or that cautious job. Genuine Cooperation It was just a year ago now that sixty citizens of Batesville, Ark., met voluntarily to study a piece of proposed legislation about to be con sidered by the House committee of which their Washington representa tive was a member. They deliberat ed thoughtfully, reached a conclu sion and mailed Hon. Wilbur D. Mills a brief statement of their wishes and a list of their names. I wish the back-home friends of every congressman in Washington would hold such a meeting soon on one or more vital national issues. It would twist the lever from the hand of pressure groups. It would clear the atmosphere along the Potomac. It would strengthen the morale of Congress, which is the individual cit izen's only citadel from oppression. ORIGIN OF CANINE TERMS EXPLAINED ^Pog Authority, on Radio, Tells H .. Meaning of Popular Expressions Some unusually interesting facts, about the origin and meaning of dog words and dog expressions were re lated ha ? Miller, executive secretary of the Gaines Dog Re search Center. New York City while a guest on the "What's the Good Word?" pro p-am over the ' Mutual network , rvmlh a xm Originally, he Hairy Miller iaid, the word -dor?from the old English "dogge," the French "dogue" and the Latin ? ?dogo"?was used to designate a cer tain type of fighting or hunting dog, but later came into general usige tor all types of doge. The word "dog" ; is believed to be a corruption of the ?ound "daw, daw, daw" whieh is the aound of Jhe .hark of a dog when i x. heard in the distance. The expression "dog days" comes to us from ancient times and has its origin in the fact that the sun is nearer Siri us, commonly called the , Dog Star, during the hottest part of : the summer. Today "dog days" are ' considered to continue for 40 days? 1 20 days before and 20 days after Si rius appears; or from July 3 to August 11 According to Mr. Miller, "mon grel" came from the word "min gle"?descriptive of a mixed or un known pedigree; "Fido" is Latin for faithfui?certainly a term well de served by the dog, the most faithful : of man's companions through the ages; and "Terrier' derives from the latin word "terra" and the French word "terre." both meaning earth, i Terriers were dogs originally em-1 ployed for digging after game in the earth, as in hunting foxes and bad gers. Mr. Miller also gave quick ex planations on how certain breeds of dogs got their names: "Sennauser is derived from the German term for whiskers, for which this breed is famous. "Chow Chow. Chow in Chinese means something that is edible, and in China the Chow Chow is favored as an all-around dog, including its use for food in an emergency. "Whippet The Whippet was always a running dog. It wax noted that this dog had the habit of snapping at the heels of other dogs when running after game, and that the noise made by this snapping resembled the crack of a whip.
