?HOLLYWOOD .... .... HALO By Dor*thy M. = ' ?? ? WNU Feature*. He was back in his room. The movie had been good. In (act, the movie had been very good. But now, alone again, be (elt a little sad. On the table before him stood a silver-framed photograph?her pic ture, with her autograph. He was going to write her a letter. He start ed out the way they do in movies and books?chewing the top of the fountain pen, writing a few lines, wadding up sheet after sheet. . Finally, after a struggle, he plunged ahead: "Dear Gloria: "I saw your new picture, 'Holly wood Halo,' at the Carthay Circle tonight. You were as sweet and beautiful as ever. But then, I guess it's just natural for me to think you're tops! "You'll be surprised, I reckon, when you open your fan mail to morrow,; and in it find this. Maybe you will think that I'm a little silly. But I'm not. The trouble is adults think kids don't have any sense. But a guy who's 14 knows plenty. Especially what he likes and wants. "Well, what I like more than all the world IS you?and what I want most is to have you all to myself. I love you more than life, and I'm proud of your success. (I read that last sentence in a book. But I mean "I saw your new picture. Ton were as sweet, as beautiful as ever." it, and it is the truth.) I'd like to be the one to give you everything you want in life. But I wouldn't want you to belong to anyone else. Maybe that is selfish. But you'U understand, I hope. "You were wonderful in the pic ture, tonight. Especially, the scene in which you did that dance when you came out in that long, blue dress. You know what I did, Gloria? I closed my eyes and pre tended I was the one there with you, whirling you about. And the part where you were in the road ster, going real fast?I pretended I was the driver and you were at my side. Your hair blew back away from your face, and you were laugh ing. I love to hear you laugh! "I wish you were here right now, instead of your photograph. I wish I you ' would come in right now through the doorway, and sit on the side of the bed, and talk. I can just imagine how you'd look. Maybe you'd wear the robe you wore in the picture?I think you called the color 'chartroose.' And slippers to match, witl) whj}| fur .trim at the ?op. And your hair would be loose around your shoulders, and all soft | apd golden around your face. Oh, Gloria, you're so beautiful! You make me feel so proud! "In the picture, you cried?and even if I did know it wasn't real, | I couldn't help, feeling sad. "The part of the picture I liked best was when you put on a white | apron, to cook a dinner for guests ?you didn't know much about it, but you were bound you would do It or bust. That part was natural and real. That's why I liked it so much. You seemed just like yourself, and so little and helpless and cute. "I pretended you were going to , cook hamburgers, and it was Satur day night, and we didn't have a ' single guest?just you and me? and you didn't have to go back to the studio for a whole month! "Oh, Gloria! Wouldn't it be won derful? I love you so much! Maybe it's best you aren't here, and I can write all this?I'm afraid I could never get it said if it had to come out in talk! "Even if you can't be Just mine, I want you to be bappy and to have your success. But don't forget I love you. Your own Johnny. "P. S. I heard you tell someone the other night that it took a lot more than make-up to hide a 14-year old son. I know you love me, though ?I'm sure I could tell if it was pre tend. "But I wish it didn't matter ao much for people to know I'm your son. I wish you could just stay home and cook hamburgers. I wish I could stop calling you Gloria, and just call you Mom." Released by Wealerr Nfwipiprr \ m fight against radicalism must be continuous THERE IS grave danger that and that is the great major ity who desire the maintenance of our form of government and our economic system may take the re buke administered to the subversive element in the last elction as a permanent defeat. It is not that; it has but driven the Reds, the pinks and fellow travelers, the adherents of Moscow ideology, back to their burrows under ground. From that vantage point, they, like the moles and gophers, will continue to gnaw at the roots of our liberties until an opportune time when they again will appear in the open, and our danger again will be apparent. We Americans are an emo tional people. Our emotions cause some portion of us to shift with each change in our pocket books. We are prone to chase phantasies, and some day we may catch one by the tail and find it impossible to let loose. We did not quite catch the one we have just repudiated, though we came too close for comfort. Should depression again engulf us, the element we have turned against would be welcomed back. What we need is a greater degree of.stability of principle. Such sta bility is based on a definite knowl edge of facts, and especially facts as they concern each of us as in dividuals. Such knowledge would give us a better understanding of the meaning to each of us of con stitutional government, and the op portunities offered by our free en terprise to everyone with ambition. That story can be told in thou sands of ways, and some one, or more, of those ways will drive the lesson home to each and every one who reads or listens. Each story must be a brief, factual state ment that would carry a definite message to each Joe Brown, John Doak or Sam Smith. The continuing circulation of such factual information, to be read or heard by the present and future gen erations, will destroy the last ves tige of radicalism in this country. Without something to effectually plug the holes of their burrows, we can expect the carriers of Mos cow ideology to emerge again with ? in a comparatively short time. ? ? ? PEOPLE RUSHING INTO DEBT The savings banks have more money on deposit than at any previous time in our history. A great number of workers, more than 58 million, have well-paid jobs. There is not a sufficient amount of commodities to meet consumer demand, especially so in such durable goods as auto mobiles, washing machines, re frigerators, sewing machines and other things more frequent ly purchased on installments. According to a bulletin issued by the home economics bureau, despite these conditions Ameri can consumers are going into debt twice as fast as at any pre vious time in our history. The greatest item of increase is in charge accounts at the stores and in personal loans. Why are the people rushing into debt? Possibly they fear near ap proach of uncontrolled inflation prophesied by those who op posed the lifting of price con trols, and expect to pay for what they have bought with cheap dollars of the future. Inflation means a debtor's paradise. . . . EVERYBODY LOSES A farm paper, published in a mid western state, charged the county seat with collecting from the farm ers, through a town sales tax, the money to run the town government. The town paper replied with a state ment that the people of the town were paying for the education of . the farmers' children. And the row . was on between town and country. ! The only beneficiaries have been the merchants of a nearby city, with whom the farmers now are trading, ! and, incidentally, paying a city sales tax. The row was unprofitable. ? ? * "SOCIALIST," said the young woman, a college stodent, just past 21, as she designated party affiliation when registering to vote. She was the daughter of one of the town's teachers, and one wondered that ideology was Imbibed at the home lire side, or on the college campus. ? ? ? THEY STILL are looking for Pfcs in the army, a tip for ex-federal job holders. ? ? ? THE WEST COAST manufae trrrr is asking why be should pay more to ship his product east, than the eastern manufac turer pays to ship the same product west. A query for the I.C.C. o ? ? THERE IS not much that now can be done about the millions, or prob ably billions, spent on impractical whims during the war, but it would bo some satisfaction to know whose whims, and what they cost the tax payers. . Woman's World Stdlt Out the New Year Right, j^By Making Yourself Attractive * 1 V1'" ? , ?trla ^JJa/eg X\7 HEN YOU Catch your*e* took ** inj in (he mirror and saying, "I'm not as good-looking as I was at 20," lsok out lady and takg your self in band. Or, if you shrug off doing something about your clothes with the flimsy excuse, "The fash ions are for me this season," be truthful to yourself at least and admit that you're just being lazy. No woman, with all the modern aids to make her attractive, need I feel that she has lost her youth and charm. True, she may have added a few years, but with those years she gains a new kind of beauty, a poise and maturity that is even more attractive than her beauty of the early 20s. And as for fashions, isn't it a bit silly to think that designers would neglect any type of woman? No, let's face the facts. Somehow or other, you've just let yourself slip, and what you really need is to attire yourself in the latest, and I defy you to And at least half a dozen styles that you can't wear. Sometimes it does take a bit of looking to And just what we're after, but when you do find it, wear it, and you'll enjoy the com pliments. No longer can women ask, "Which is better, to be dressed be comingly, or to be dressed in the height of fashion?" There may once have been a reason for this sad plea but now we have so many edi tions of each trend that if you try, you can find one which will be flattering especially for you. And don't shy away from adding a few imaginative touches which will en . hance the style for you. Hoods Are Pretty as Well as Practical For instance, take the hood. Ac cording to Chicago Fashion In dustries, it is extremely popular, especially with the young crowd. I It makes a lot of sense to wear it | on cold days, and chances are you've been tempted to have one. If your features are tiny and you have a good profile, or if you have a long, lean face with high cheek bones, the tailored version of the hood will do the most for you. But don't discard the hood idea if you don't fit in the above cate gory. Let's say that your features aren't quite as perfect as you've wished. You're the kind who likes to wear soft hats with perhaps a fluff of hair to break the severity of the Jiat. In its usual form the hood is-not for you, but suppose you try a 1 knitted, loose snood that gives you the covered-up look and provides the necessary softness. You might even try bangs or a soft fluff of j curls to decorate the forehead. Or, i if you don't wear bangs, you , might arrange a wave or push down the pompadour for a similar look. j Follow the Fashions, Find Own Version A good way to illustrate this is | to watch women who are buying their clothes. I've seen many a tall, bony-chested woman turn down ( a "V" necked dress which was oth erwise perfect for her. Had she spent a little time {taking about it, she could have used a froth of attractive ruffles at the neck, or even a clever, dickey effect which could have done a neat job of con cealing, and made a lovely gar ment for her. Very often you haven't the time to chance your make-up. Bat yon can refresh your skin and fet a fresh (low! Wrap an lee cube in a bit of damp cotton. Sprinkle this with skin freshener or toilet water. Bub over throat and face. Press the perfumed lee cube over the closed eyelids. Press cosmetic tissue over throat and face, then pat on face powder. Brash off excess. A little Accent with your lipstick?and there yon are! w ? m Princess Fashion <-? The princess silhouette us Trifere Introduces it In sheer black woolen has a flanged seaming for skirt and neckline. Tiny gold buttons, the sig nature of the designer, aro linked. If you tend to run large in tho hips, don't consistently avoid dresses which have some -hip inter est. Look for dresses with a side draping or other such interest that breaks the hip line and actually gives you a nicer look than the absolutely straight skirt. Don't ever discard or, for that matter, buy a dress without inves tigating the hemline and what it does, or can do for you. Letting the hem down, or perhaps lifting it as little as a half an inch can Improve your appearance a hundred per cent. It all depends upon your height and the sire of your legs. What about sleeves? Well, here you have all kinds to choose from. For thin or heavy arms, you'd do best to avoid extremes. Follow na tural lines and skip the too-full types or the bare arm look. If you have a tall, slim figure, look for dramatic peplums to cut four height. You are the girls, too, who can wear wide belts with inter esting decorative detail. Double oreasted suits are very flattering. On the other hand, if you are dim, but short, look to the short ooleros with high cut waistlines, orincess lines or pinafore effects. Imaginative Tricks Scarves are a happy pick-up for many an old dress. Wear them as interest underneath the dress to add a touch of gay print or color to the costume, or simply sling them over skirt or dress neckline and tie in back. Don't stop there, though, for a scarf can add hip interest if it is wrapped around you and tied in a perky bow. Or, wear it around your head, but experi ment with effects first There's a variety of ways to wear the peplum. Use it In dramatic and contrasting colors if you want to point up interest at a tiny waistline. Tie them like aprons, pleat them dramatically or use an all-around effect. If you want to subtract inches, use peplum colors that match the basic dress and use smooth-fit ted effects. Dickies have innumerable po tentialities. Since the area which the dicky covers is small, the color can be intense but it should be chosen for extreme compliment to you. If you're slender and of an athletic nature, use hug-me-tight vestees. If you're more the fluffy type, use short boleros that but ton, have sleeve interest and have a perky starchy look about them. Fashion Forecast The front button, princess style variation is still nice fashion for the dressy coat. You can be clever with accessories with this basic coat. Trimming takes a back seat on evening clothes. They're glamorous, perhaps even more so than before, but the interest is in material and lines rather than "things added" to the costume. For the younger ?et the pinched th waistline and wide belts have a wide appeal. Fashions to keep you warm have style, too. Notice the smart lines of fur-lined coats that avoid a baggy appearance, and watch for color interest, particularly the con trast treatment being used quite extensively. Electro-Agriculture Leads Farm Planning Federal Government Attacking Problem Science is keeping pace with elec tro-agriculture, planning end devel oping new methods (or easing the farmers' burdens and attacking troublesome problems with "atom ic age" devices in Buck Rogers fashion. Farm electrification division of United States department of agri culture proposes to consider six of these problems next year. High on the list is control of insect pests through use of electric lamps and light traps. Insects will be subjected to a wide variety of tests to deter mine color and intensity of light which best attracts them to an in candescent doom. The division also will experiment with the use of infra-red heaters to dry seeds and provide thermal therapy treatments for farm ani mals. It will consider the use of ultrasonic vibrations for treating seeds and delve the limitations, cost and influence of bactericidal lamps in animal shelters and storage cel lars. Bactericidal lamps have grown in popularity recently with poultry men and dairyman to control res piratory diseases among chickens and sterilize dairy equipment. Another top project to be consid ered is development of electrical equipment to aid farmers in per forming chores. Since from 20 to 80 per cent of a farmer's time is spent in doing chores, the division feels that electricity can be pot to great er use in taking over more routine jobs than is now the case. Experi mental work also will be done in determining proper standards of construction for general purpose re frigerators for farm use. Banish Barn Drudgery By Mechanical Cleaner The automatic bam cleaner will remove mature from both (otters at the same time. Where the surroundings are clean, the problem of preparing cows for milking is simplified. With the better barn cleaners, such as the Crown illustrated above, the only hand work required is the walk along the gutter with h scraper and see to it that the manure actual ly gets into the gutter. The cleaner, at the touch of an electric button, removes the ma nure from the gutter and elevates It into a spreader located outside the barn. Hog Breeding Crate The breeding crate allows the breeder to use a mature boar on immature gilt or vice versa with out danger of injury, and it con serves the vigor of the boar. The crate shown is constructed so it can also be used as a holding crate for ringing, ear tagging or vaccinating. This cratf was de signed by Kansas State college. Swine By-Products a Cure for Peptic Ulcer A new hormone has been discov ered in the mucous lining of the up per intestinal tract of freshly slaughtered hogs which is proving effective in healing and preventing recurrence of peptic ulcers, accord ing to Or. Andrew C. Ivy of Univer sity of Illinois. The new hormone promises relief for over a million ulcer sufferers in this country. It has been tested on a large number of patients with satisfactory rsaulti. =t SEWING CIRCLE PATTERNS DaitoreJ jCinyerie for Watron shoulders, or if you prefer, warn ribboo straps and edge with tbr lace. ? ? ?
