V ,.-S " 5' OUR " WASTEFUL . POLITENESS. Not rery long ago the manager of 2i telephone Company, ia one of our larger cities issued instructions to the excbaage girls that they must 90: longer use the v word "please" in conversation with patrons. - It -consumed too much time. "What num ber. Dlease?" was shorn of its em- .. a ... , ' : .j broid erf and "red uoed to ? what nam br?n To be sure, it was less eour;: teous, buf, on the other hand, ix was .. infinitely more profitable. - By ac tual count it was found that the girls i had been saying "please" nine 'hun dred thousand times a day. Alio w ing half a secend to its utterance, here' was an awful daily waste of one hmndred and twenty-fire hours Fire ' days going to waste every remad of the clock; a sheer lots of sixty, moaths out of every : year! Is it any wonder the manager was con - cernea and put .a stop to the drain? Why, the time it took to lay "pleas in one day was more than enough to allow him and his whole family to go to Europe. True, this is but a local circum stance: but to those of us who are not asleep it portends the beginniag of a werld-wide reform. If the elimination of a single word of po liteness in a telephone m exchange can insure such a remarkable saving of precious time, our duty lies clear before us. "Hello," "Dear sir," "Yours truly," "Beg pardon," "Thank you," and a score"of other little pleasantries left over from our unpregressive days must ineritably follow the fate ef the telephone "please" aad the kitchen coffee-grinder. It would not' be surprising to learn that the people of tb.e United States say "Good morning" a hun dred million times a day. The 'loss of time that this represents, allowing a second to each greeting, is enough to befuddle the most reckless spend thrift. It means that as a nation we stand still more than three years every day. There are hot figures enough te calculate where the world would have been in its history by . this time if we had been free of , just this one encumbering formality of speech. Clifford Howard in May Xiippincott's. . Is the Stomach Indispensable. . ah operation for the removal of the stomach, in a Chicago hospital recently, promoted discussion among the sur geons whether the stomach could be removed and the patient be none the worse for it. Before the discussion Jiad well died out, the patient had died. It demonstrated he could not live without his stomach. To keep the stomach in good conditian, and cure constipation, indigestion, etc., use the great herb laxative compound, Dr. Caldwell's Syr up Pepsin. It iji absolutely guaranteed to do what we claim, and if you want to try it before buying, send your address for a free sample bottle to Pepsin Syrup Co., 119 Caldwell Bldg., Monticello, 111 It is sold by The Boddie-Perry Drug Co., at 50c and $1 a bottle. Many people object to taking the strong medicines usually prescribed by physicians for rheumatism. There is no need of internal treatment in case Of muscular or chronic rheuma tismvand more than nine out of every ten cases of he disease are of one or the other of these varieties. When there is no fever and tittle (if any) swelling, you may know that it is only necessary to apply' ; Chamberlain's Liniment freely to get quick relief. Try it For Sale by-Boddi"6-Perry Drug Co.
