Mr. Henry P. Speed, our popular ]
carrier, has retained from a tea days i
vacation which he spent quite pleas- [
* antly at Ocean View and otbef re i
sort9 around Norfolk. Mr. Morris]
Person attended strictly to I'ncle |
Sam's business during Mr. SpeedV
sojourn by the sea. " |
Mr. Ah Alston, of Airlie, who I
spent a few days with friends in this
section, returned home last week.
A number of our people attended
the protracted meeting at ShadyGrove
in Warren county last week. I
' The meeting was conducted by the'
pastor, Kev. B. C. Thompson, assis- 1
ted by Kev. Mr. Moye, former pastor 1,
of that charge. I understand jt was
one of the best meetings held there
, . |i
in some time, and great good was j
accomplished, there being a number]'
of converts. The ^meeting closed
last Friyay.
Mr. Henry Speed has a very fine I
field of young corn which may be
classed a "brag crop." But he does t
not claim that it is as good as some
he has seen.
o Friends of Capt. P. A. Davis will <
be pleased to know that his health
is improving. While Mr. Davis has j
apt been confined to the boose, his
impaired health has kept bim at
home mote than usual for some
months past^and I am glad to note '
that he is feeling better and looking 1
younger. '
Dong faces are assuming normal
conditsons and a more cheerful ei- '
pression is noticed od account of 1
a brighter prospect for crops than
was shown a short time ago. Cot- 1
ton is growing fast and fruiting well
It is also losing some of the small
squares and bolls by shedding.
*" Mr. and Mis. T. H. Strickland and
son Wilton, have returned from a
visit to relatives in Nash and Jbhn
eton countieB.
Mr. W illon Strickland baa a new
bicycle which he enjoys riding .
around > "Schlossburg," and giving
pleasure to the small children as he ,
takes thera out for a ride every ,
morning and evening. _ i

Messrs. Julian Alston and June

week.
Mies I.nla Massenburg, of Louisburg,
is visitiug Miss Annie Belle

Miss Mattie Belle Alston has returned
from a brief visit with Misses
Jennie and Ring-Alston at Inez.
Schioss tolks were treated to a vo"
cal serenade by the young ladies ana
gents, guests of Miss Mar}- Alston,
on Friday evening last. We regret
that they did not remain longer to
nliyen us with their sweet music,

Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Williams made

Mr.Hugb Hayes was a Schioss vis

Mr. J. J. Murray has the beet

last week.
Last week was quite livey in Bocial
circles with many of our young
friends. The hospitable home of
Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Alston was open
to the pleasure of a happy party of
young people, guests of their popular
(laughter, Miss Mary Alston and
her brother, Mr. Julutu^Alsios.

Several of our young folks, so- I
companied by some of the visitors,
"attended the Sunday school pic nic I
at Epsom last Friday. They report [
a very large crotvd and a most-enjoy-4able
time. Among those who went
from here were, Morton Alston and
Miss Myrtie Alston, Julian A. Alston
and Miss Ernestine Hayes, June
Egercon and Miss Mary Alston.
J. W. Taylor, of Dukes, Nash
county, came up Saturday, paying a
short visit to his uncle, Mr. F. H-j
Strickland.
Edgar Frederick ar d: Sydman
Williams, of Warren, spent Sunday
with Edward Alston.
It is very encouraging to note the
rapid growth of all kinds of srops in
this part of-the county- Present indications
point to a fairly good yield
especially cotton, with the exception
of the srop on old or saudy land.
Schlose is coming. Oar gixls are
wearing big bats and oar boys-are
wearing sachet powders in their
^jeans."
