BURN PLANTS TO DESTROY WEEVIL fall Is the Proper Time to Begin War on Cotton Pests. THEY CAN LIVE ALL WINTER. By Removing Rubbish In Which They j Hibernate the Number Left to Begin Destruction in the Spring Will Be Lessened?Frost Will Kill Them Unle? They Have Protection. _ By W. D. HUNTER, Bureau of Entomology of the United States Department of Agriculture. Like many of the most important injurious inserts in this country, the Cotton boll weevil Is uot a native of the United States. Its original home was undoubtedly in the plateau region of Mexico or Central America, and it may originally have fed upon some plant other than cotton. Previous to 18512 the insect had spread through Mexico, but little Is known regarding the extent or rapidity of tills dlspera I on ? About 1S02 the boll weevil crossed tbe liio Grande near Brownsville. Tex. Ck'J COTTON BOLL WKKVIL (a. beetle from above: b. same from side. About Ave times natural stze. Author's illustration. J By 1894 It bad spread to a half dozen ? counties in southern Texas and was . brought to the attention of the bureau of entomology. Since 1S94 the boll weevil has ex* tended its range annually from forty to sereuty miles. During the first ten years after its advent the annual rate of spread was 5.040. square miles. Since 1001 the annual Increase in the Infested territory has averaged 26.SS0 square miles, but in 1004 51.500 square miles became infested. Of course the figures given do not refer to th? area ' in cotton. In many parts of the Infesicd territory the area devoted to " ootton is much less than 10 per cent of . - the total area. Fivo States Affected. i At present the weevil is found in 5 Texas. Louisiana. Mississippi. Arkansas aud Oklahoma. In Mississippi eighteen counties are Infested, in Arkansas twenty-eight and in Oklahoma . about one-fifth of the state. The total area infested comprises about 225.0O"? square miles, and this covers about 3*1 aer cent of the cotton acreage of th*? . United States. | Undoubtedly for several years the f boll weevil has caused a loss of about 400.000 bales of cotton annually. A * conservative estimate shows that since the weevil has invaded this country it I has caused a loss of 2.550.000 bales of i < cotton at a value of about $125,000,000. j J Characteristics of Weevil. j I The adult boll weevil is about one- 1 j fourth of an inch in length, varying !* from one-eighth to onc-thinl of an inch, j 1 with a breadth about one-third of the j.? length. This measurement includes the ; snout, which Is about one-half the , i length of the body. Variation in size ! J Is due to the amount of food the insect ; has obtained In the larval stage. In-1 dlvidunls from bolls are therefore j nearly always larger than those from : sou a res fnnblowu hurls i. ' The color (grayish or brownish* de- j j ponds upon the time th.it may ?Mwe i elapsed after transformation into -the j stage. The recently emerged Individ- ] nals are light yellowish in color, but this passes to a gray or Dearly black j I Shade in a few weeks' time. Lives Through Winter. The boll weevil passes the winter in i the adult stage.
