Township for improvement of the Public
Koads, and such tax, amounting to
between ?3250.00?rtd $3600.00 annually
has been levied and expended since that
time; and the results are appareiit to
all. Our roads do not compare favorably
at all with those of adjoining towi g
ships built with the money in hand and
under improved and more modern meth- ,
ods although in the tern or more years
working under this system we have
spent more money, but the trouble lies
not in the waste of funds but in the
attempt to build the roads a little at a
I me and according to the funds in hand
P ich year. It has been demonstrated
$ iat good roads cannot be built piece
meal; and we therefore procured a bill
to enable you to se<l bonds and have
funds in hand with which to buy teams
and machinery sufficient to build the
roads according to the best and most
improved methods. This bill does not
increase the tax levy?in fact by its
terms it cannot do so, and unless the
majority of the voters choose to change
the method of levying the tax by issu -
. ance of bonds the old tax levy of 25
cents on the $100 stands indefinitely on
us. The old and present system of
taxation is not disturbed by the bond
election unless bonds are voted for;and,
if bonds are voted for, the old levy will
be annulled and the levy made for
bonds which cannot in any event ex
ceed the levy, as now fixed, of 25 eents
on the $100. In fact the Board is confident
that bonds can be successfully
floated and matured on a levy less than
, 25 centa on the $100. Even under present
valuations which valuations may be
reasonably expected to increase, if not
at once under the new system of taxation
under general law, certainly as the ,
years pass by.
We therefore urge the voters to come
to the polls on M*v loth
a large majority for bonds and enable
us to get in line with progressive and
successful road builders, assuring them
that their burdens cannot and will not
be increased but lessened, if possible,
under taxes to float bonds.
