John D. Berry, grand secretary of
the North Carolina Grand Lodge of
Odd Fellows tor many years, who ex
pected to retire the first of July, has
been requested by Grand Master Spaul
ding to continue to administer the
affairs of the office until the first of
September. Chas. G. Smith, elected
as the succecaor ol Mr. Berry at the
last ss<tr:cn of thy Grand Lodge with
the Idea of transferring the office to
Gc-lduboro, resigned before he got
started and the Grand Master decided
to take a few weeks time In picking
another grand secretary. Grand
Lodge officers will be called In con
ferenc'e before a final conclusion Is
| reached. It is generally conceded that
Mr. Berry Is the best fitted member
of the order for the position and that
hecan hare the Job again "without
the asking." But he has likely made,
or plans business conectlons which
would prevent his continuance as
grand secretary even If requested to
do so, which Is quite likely.
North Carolina Is still classed as
one of the wealthiest Internal revenue
tax districts In the United States, ac
cording to Collector Grissom, who re
ports collections for the fiscal year
to be $192,859,000, or more than twen
ty-five million dollars more than was
collected during the preceding fiscal
year. The tobacco tax paid by North
Carolina establishments aggregates
$170,000,000 and the est of the gov
ernment for collecting it jfas only
10 cents a hundred dollars, the low
est reported by any other collection
district In the entire country.

State Republican Executive Commit. .
tee, has adopted a brand new plan
or organization by dividing the State
Into zones and naming a manager for
each zone. Six of these zones are to i
be created, with the eastern head
quarters, Raleigh, mid-state headquar
ters in Greensboro, Northeastern at
Wilkesboro, Southeastern at Char
lotte, Western at Asheville and Mid
west at Hickory. Johnson J. Hayes,
national committeeman, is cooperat I
Ing with Chairman Jackson, having
recently visited the points mentioned
and carefully explained the proposed
new system to local committees. With
Jackson to do the planning and Hayes
the talking State republicans hope
to make a better showing this year
than usual.
