TWit&S TODAY and ART .... 1400 years ago One of the great events In t-he world .of art wa^the discovery, in the ancijnt Church of St. Sophia in Istanbul, that under the plaster of its walls are the oldest known ChrisT-iati pictures. Built inthe year 537, by the Emperor Justini an, In the city then known as Con stantinople. St. Sophia was the chief temple of the Christian faith for more than 900 years. The Turks captured the city in 1453, converted the- church into a Moslem Mosque, and covered the pictures with plaster. Now the Turkish government has disestablished Mohammedan ism as tHe state religion, Seclared the old church a national monu ment., and has intrusted the work of scraping off the plaster and re vealing the beautiful ancient Christian art, to an American com mission, the Byzantine Institute, which has a dozen experts at work carefully uncovering the world's oldest art collection. One by one the relics of the ear|y days of civilization and the record of man's progress in the arts and crafts are coming to light. They all add proof that the upward march of humankind has been very short, indeed. WOOD .... preservation A few years ago a friend of mine found, buried under the bed of a river in Yucatan, thousands of mahogany logs which had been cut by the early Spanish explor ers, wh(f tried to float t-hem down to the sea for shipment to Cuba or Spain. A great flood had cover ed them with gravel, and there they lay for more than 300 years. My friend dug them up and made a small fortune. The lumber was I still as sound as when first* cut. I Now they are "mining" white ! cedar from the marshland near { Mauricetown, N. J. Buried for j hundreds of years, tree trunks up { to five feet thick and fifty feet long are being hauled out of mud sometimes 30 feet deep. The wood is sound and smells like freshly cut cedar. These logs have been preserved because t'hey have been continu ously submerged. Wood decays when it is alternately wet and dry. Next to a dry barn the best place to store wood, apparently, is at the bottom of a pond. BEAM REUNION The TIMES is requested to make the following announce ment: "Will you please announce in your paper that the John Teeter Beam descendants will have their annual reunion which is always j held at New Prospect Church five miles northeast of Shelby each ! year on Thursday before the third ' Sunday in August, the date of Ywiich is August 12th this year. "John Teeter Beam is the fath er of all the Beams covering a wide area of the Pieailiont section of North Carolina. k>Every year from tifteen to twenty-five hund red descendants gather at New Prospect Church to pay respect to their forefather. .This is only a small percentage of his descend ants, they gather here from all sections of the United States. ' ! ' The program committee has i arranged one of the best programs i ever. There will be good speak- I ing. singing and dinner served on I the ground. The unveiling of a | large and handsome monument j erected to the memory of John Teeter Beam will be dedicated at this reunion. We are expecting one of the largest reunions yet." G. N. Liilay and RI. C. Lilley of Gatosvllle purchased this spring the first combine in Gates Coun ty. Thi3 machine was used to as sist farmers in harvesting their small grain.
