'Mr. E. Joe Cheatham and Mr.
Thurston J. Jackson, Telegraphic
Operators of Franklinton, gave
, special illustrated discussions last
! Tuesday morning to the eighty-.
! five office-prftctice students in the
Business Department of the Col
lege concerning the latest' develop
ments of telegraphing. They de
monstrated in a most interesting
manner how the dots and dushes
I are given and deciphered. Mr.
I Jackson "sent" several telegrams
| from one part of the typing room
| to Mie other, while Mr. Cheatham
i interpreted and wrote them on the
; board. This was both entertain
' ing and instructive to the class.
Mr. Cheatham gave instructions
] as to how to write telegrams in
j the correct way. He showed
samples of the various types of
telegrams now being used, includ
ing a number of telegrams of
greetings which may be sent any
where in the United States for
only twenty-five cents on holi
days, birthdays, Valentine's Day.
and other special occasions.
Recently, certaiu inventions
have made possible the sendiug
of twenty messages on the same
wire at the same time. Such rapid
improvements naturally affect 'the
service in such a way t>hat many
more telegrams may be sent at
less expense. ? -
Mr. Cheatham said that now.
because of the railroad pensions,
there is a great demand for tele
graphic operators. -He impressed
upon the students the fact Mint
the telegraphic business is inter
esting. enjoyable, and well worth
the work it requires. Mr. Cheath
am and Mr. Jackson gave each of
the students a cordial invitation
to go to their office and see "just
; how it is worked."
Both the faculty and student j
' body of Louisburg College appre
| ciate the iuteresu that Mr. Chea
i tham and Mr. Jackson have taken:
in the Office-Practice class and I

have given it.

KI NN SCHOOL DISTRICT j
MEETING
The fourth teachers' meeting i
of the Bunn School Districts was |
held In the Bunn High School ati
two o'clock on March 8. 1938.
The teachers first met in the I
auditorium wheiv Mr. M. T. I
Lamm. Supervisor of the Bunn :
School District opened the meet- j
ing.
The teachers sang t-he Boola ,
song which was directed by Missj
Faustina Shearon and prayer was j
offered by Mr. C. C. Brown. Prin- '
cipal of the HarrU School.
Mr. Lamm appointed three
teachers from the Bunn School
District to go as delegates to the
Annual State Convention which is
held in Raleigh on March 16, 17,
18. and 19. These teachers were
Misses Mildred Manning and Wil
ma Phillips and Mr. C. C. Brown.
Superintendent W. R. Mills
gave an interesting account of
his trip to the NKtlonal Conven
tion which was recently held in
Atlantic Ciuy. Mr. Mills said there
were approximately 12000 pres
ent at the convention and that the
program was one of the best that
he had ever had an opportunity
of obseerving and it> made him
proud of the public school system
of this country. There were more |
than 450 speeches and the main i
Idea which ran through the pro- i
graiu was "Democracy'' the only
real salvation for ' this country.
One speaker on the subject of
"Education of teachers" brought) j
out the fact that too . many teach
ers are attending teachers colleges
and trying to be teachers when
they are really suited tor some
thing else and teachers' colleges
should begin selecting their teach- i
eis and if It is found that they :
will not make acceptable teachers
then they should be advised to :
folloMMtfther occupations to which i
they are suited. i
Teachers need a large amount <
of academic training in addition
to methods of teaching. Many
teachers begin on methods befdre
knowing the subject matter. The
time will come when all the teach
er training courses will be grad
uate courses.
Superintendent Mills compli
mented the teachers of the Bunn
School District on the splendid
work they are doing.
After this enjoyable and inter
esting talk, we went to the vari
ous Departmental meetings where
several teachers from the differ
ent departments gave talks on Mie
subject of "Teaching the Lesson"
which was the main topic on the
program.
The discussiou period of the
Primary Department was conduct
ed by Supt. W. R. Mills and the
Grammar Grade and High School
Department) which were held Joint
ly was conducted by Mr. M.T. -
Lamm, Supervisor of the Burin
School District. These meetings
are a source of inspiration to the
teachers and It is always a plea
sure to have Mr. Mills and Mr.
Lamm present for they always
give many suggestions which are
helpful and encouraging to the
teachers. ? Cor.
