STATE COLLEGE ANSWERS
TIMELY FARM QUESTIONS
QUESTION: How can I save
I Into In growing sweet potatoes?
ANSWER: Two/men with a
tractor did as much'work as 16
men in getting ready for a sweet
potato crop on the farm of G. W.
Wright of Beaufort. Formerly
the land was broken, rows mark
ed, land opened with a plow, fer
tilizer drilled, and the land ra
bedded. This was 8 operations
for one man, or one operation
for each of eight men. Now
Wright connects his tractor to the
fertilizer ?distributor-planter com
bination, and removes the chain
so as to throw the planter out
of gear. In one operation he
opens the land, distributes the
fertilizer, and beds the land
ready for planting. Since the
tractor runs twice as fast as u
man walks, Wright figures the
operation equivalent to the work
of 16 men by the old method.

QUESTION : How can I, ? a cot
ton ginner, get the Smjth-Doxey
classing service on cotton for my
gin and m_\ farmer customers?
ANSWER: Any ginner inter
ested in having this service for
his gin customers and his gin
should immediately contact his
county agent. A ginner to be
eligible for this service must be
listed, and all applications must
be sent in by August 1. Appli
cation blanks will be found at the
office of the county agent.

QUESTION: I have yellow
streaks in my alfalfa field. How
would you account for these
streaks?
ANSWER: The farmer had
used 90 bags of hydrated (quick
ly available) lime on 4 acres and
the spreader had overlapped in
making the rounds. This gave
an extra heavy application of the
quickly available lime and result
ed in a forced potash deficiency.
It is suggested extra potash on
the yellowing streaks. "This
field shows the objection of using
quickly available lime, rather
than dolomltlc limestone, unless
proper precautions are taken in
spreading it."
