"Lights On For Safety", Labor Day Weekend Slogan . i State Trooper William "Bill" Ethrldge of Frankllnton report ed yesterday that the total fa talities at that time was 1014 or 194 more than had been killed on N. C. highways at the same time one year ago. Ethrldge also reported that his department Is launching an all out campaign for highway safety during the upcoming Labor Day holiday week end. "Wherever you go, drive with your headlights on." , That was the advice from Trooper BUI Ethrldge as North Carolina prepared to plunge Into the long Labor Day week end. Trooper Ethrldge was sug gesting that holiday travelers drive with their headlights burning all during the holiday as a symbol of safety. "Lights on will Indicate to others that you are concerned about accident prevention and that you are rigidly obeying the traffic laws," he said. All patrol cruisers on the road over the holiday week end will burn their headlights, as will thousands of commercial trucks and buses, according to authorities. The campaign has been headed " Light a pledge for safety." Patrol officials urge motor ists to snap on their lights from 6 p.m. Friday, September 4, and keep them on wherever they drive until midnight Mon day when the holiday ends. A similar campaign was con ducted two years ago, Trooper Ethrldge said. "And as a re sult travelers were conscious ly aware that road safety Is serious business."
