There Will Always Be A Christmas
This Christmas Day a sol
dier In Viletnam, dirty with the
stench of Jungle warfare, sad
dened by the sight of falling
comrades, and lonely for the
things of home, will tear open
a letter.
For a few minutes, he will
forget the pangs of fatigue, the
loneliness, and he will recall
the days of his boyhood, days
that were carefree. The jungle
smell will be replaced momen
tarily by the smell of clean
sheets back home and the pun
gence of the Christmas tree
and the aroma of food being
prepared In the kitchen.
Almost before the letter Is
finished, the Illusion will van
ish, and In its stead will be an
overwhelming longing for peace.
He may weep for the meaning
which has gone out of his life.
As touching as this soldier's
plight may be, it holds great
meaning.
As long as men feel Joy from
nothing more than reading a
letter from home, or have hope
expressed as a longing for
peace, or repent through tears
of lost meaning, we' know Qod is
alive. And we know, too, there
will always be Christmas.

$2,640 Per Family Tax Bill
By JESSE HELMS
The Tax Foundation, an or
ganization which makes a con
tinuing study of governmental
spending and taxation, reports
that the federal government this
fiscal year will spend an av
erage of $2,640 In taxes from
every American family. It will
take In an average of $2,500
from every American fomlly,
meaning that It will go In ad
ditional debt to the tune of
$140 for every family In the
country.
Next year, It Is estimated that
the deficit will average out to
be about $250 for each family.
Ask the average American his
reaction, and chances are that
all too many will shrug and
say: "Pve never had it so
good." But ask those same
Americans their reaction to
a proposal that they go down
to a department store, and run
up an equivalent debt which
their children and grandchil
dren will have to pay ? with
interest ? and they would re
ject the idea as being dishon
orable.
And they would be rights But
why do they regard their gov
ernment's financial practices
as being any different?
This illustrates the double
standards which Americans
have adopted. The emphasis
is on "free money from Wash
ington." At this moment, the
City of Raleigh Is trying to
generate Interest in taking an
other bite at a boondoggle called
urban renewal. All around,
practically every governmen
tal unit Is preparing plans to
request federal aid for every
conceivable project. The fed
eral controls which are sure
to follow are seldom, If ever,
considered.
In our files Is a copy of a
commencement speech, how
ever, delivered a couple of
years ago by a gentleman who
would not permit himself, or
his Institution, to be deceived.
We have retained It because It
Is It once sensible and unusual.
The speech was delivered by
Dr. Ernest Wilkinson, presi
dent of Brlgham Young Univer
sity, and undoubtedly It set off
some tongue-clucking up and
down the halls of the colleges
and universities of the nation.
Dr. Wilkinson said, In the
course of his remarks, that
In a five-year period his Insti
tution? by order of ltsiboard of
trustees?had turned dqfcn
$3,750,000 on 'federal grant*
offered to Brlgham Young Uni
versity.
How unique can you get In
his day and time!
Here are some of the reas
ons given by Dr. Wilkinson for
rejecting that "free money from
Washington":
"Easy federal money," he
said, "will encourage the In
efficient management and
shocking lack of utilization of
our existing educational facili
ties and buildings."
Second, he said, "The trillion
dollars worth of (debt and obli
gations) of the federal govern
ment, and the continuous op
eration of the government
'In the red,' do not Justify
the big, new subsidy programs
approved by Congress."
"State and prlvatp source*
are responding to, and can ade
quately meet, the educational
needs of the nation," he Insist.
"Federal control of higher
education," he said, "will ac
company federal grants, and
this is unwise and dangerous."
"Federal grants^to religious
educational institutions," he
said, "are a direct violation of
the First Amendment to the
Constitution" no matter what
anybody says, according to Dr.
Wilkinson.
In short, Dr. Wilkinson's con
cern is the preservation of the
freedom and Independence of his
Institution. He does not propose
to barter it away. It might be
noted, parenthetically and hap
pily, that the same sentiment
apparently prevails in the Efap
tist State Convention in North
Carolina.
Federal handouts have grown
greater and greater because
they are used to woo votes. To
put it simply, the people are
selling their votes --and they
are also selling their souls.
It is a sort of seduction by
subsidy.
There are not many Dr. Wil
kinsons around. In this high
priced world of government by
credit card, and politics by
bribery, his kind of integrity
may be shouted down by the
voices of easy-come, easy-go.
But when It is done, he is the
kind of man who can respond
proudly to his conscience. He
will be able to say, as few
these days can: I did the
right thing because it was right.
And that is a considerable
victory for any man, regard
less of rank or station.
Island Built
On Cars
Des Moines--A plan has been
approved by the Iowa Conser
vation Commission to chain
some 800 junked cars together
to provide a retaining wall for
an Island In Storm Lake. The
cars will be placed on the

will sink and silt will be pumped
into the center to build an is

GRASSROOTS OPINION
Hanson W. Baldwin writes in
The Reporter: "It is generally
recognized in Washington that
the military build-up which
President Johnson has now
launched represents in effect a
short-term 'stopgap* policy.
The administration hopes that
Increased but still limited es
calation may yet bring Hanoi
and Moscow to the conference
table. If not, It Is prepared
to move swiftly into what Wash
ington calls 'the second phase'
of far greater committment.
In short, the new road In Viet
nam may lead a long way with
out a |urnlng.
From the McMlnnvllle, Ore
gon, News-Register: "Public
objection to forcing a man to
Join a union to hold his Job
has been shown time and again.
The Afnerlcan people have
demonstrated, where they have
had opportunity to express an
opinion, their belief in the right
of any person to choose whether
or not he wants to Join a union
or any other organization."
