However, no body Inside or outside the conference managed to defeat the second-ranked Class A team In the East. The Phantoms will be Frank lin County's A Team In the District Playoffs In Rocky Mount. Younfsrllle held a 22-1 season record last year, los ing only to Bunn (48-47) In re gular season before tailing to Louis burg In the Tourna ment Championship game. The Phantoms went on to the Dis trict playoffs and won over Wake Ion, (87-47), Cooper's (BS-B7 OT) and Loulsburg (48-48) before being downed by Red Oak (48-45) In the Dis trict Championship game In overtime. Hor ton scored 18 points. The playoff game was made necessary when Bonn and Ep som tied for second place In regular season place. Epsom Gives Bunn Scare In Semifinals The never-say-dle Epsom Tigers stunned the Bunn Bull dogs Friday night when they almost pulled a semifinal con teat out of the fire. Leading by a comfortable margin of 38 to 26 at the start of the final frame, Bunn began to substi tute for their starters. Ep som steadily and quickly whit tled the margin to only six points with Just under two minutes left. The Bunn starters, sent beck In to stem the tide, could muster only a tie at the end of regulation and send the contest Into overtime. The Bunn strength showed in the extra three minutes as they downed the stubborn Tigers by scoring seven points and hold ing Epsom to only two. Freddie Horton with 24 and Bill Jones with 18 paced Bunn as Jerry Patterson hit for 23 points for Epsom. Youngsville Wins Two The Younfsvllle girls and boys advanced In the County Tournament last Thursday night with wins over the Epsom girls and the Gold Sand boys. R was almost Youngsvllle night at the Paul Elam Gym as the girls walloped the Ep som girls, 31-17 and the boys floored Gold Sand, 5S-2S. Linda Strother led the Youngsvllle girls with 12 points, Oelores Faulkner led Epsom with seven. Jimmy Keith led the Youngsvllle Phantoms with IB points and Phil Evans and Jimmy Bowers were high for Gold Sand with six points each. Bunn Cheerleaders The Shot That Won The Championship For Bunn The shot heard 'round Franklin County. Owen Ray, right, stepped to the foul line with 1 second left In the Champion ship game last Friday night and made the shot (note rumpled net) which gave Bunn the game and the Championship. Notice the expression of pain on the face of Sandra Cash of Youngs villa (extreme left) as the shot went through and the look of glee on the face of Ellen Andrews of Bunn (left center) and look of awe on the face of Vickie Rogers of YoungsvlUe (center). Youngsvllle boys and girls hauled down 18 awards while Bunn boys and girls landed seventeen. Gold Sand and Epsom each received four, Frankllntonand Edward Best took three and Loitlsburg drew a blank. Youngsvllle boys were pre sented awards for conference championship, tournament championship and Larry Llnd sey was named Coach of the Year for his direction of the Phantoms. Ralph Brown was named the Most Valuable Player In the Tournament and the 'Phantoms placed Larry Paschall and Cf L. Wrenn on All Conference Second Team and Ralph Brown and Jimmy Keith on the First squad. Brown, Keith and Wrenn were also named All-Tournament. The Youngsvllle girls re ceived the Tournament run ner-up trophy, placed Linda, Strother In a tie with Owen Ray of Bunn as Most Val uable Player and had Sandra Cash on the All Conference second team. Linda Strother and Vickie Rogers were named to the All Conference First Team and both made the All Tournament squad. Bunn girls won the confer ence championship. Coach of the Year for Bob Wheless and had Owen Ray chosen with Linda Strother as Most Val uable Player In the tourney. Ellen Andrews and Anita Strickland made second team All-Conference and Nadlne Gay, Owen Ray, and Vickie Baker were named to the first squad. Consolation Winner The Gold Sand Blue Devils, victors over Frankllnton (52 34) In opening round play and victims of Youngsvllle in the semifinals (S8-2S), defeated the Epsom Tigers for the Tournament Consolation title Saturday night, 59-55 In one of the best games of the event. Gold Sand held off a spirited Epsom threat In the closing moments of the game to take the four-point win. Ricky Edwards and Mike Lo vln Joined with 19 point ef forts to lead the Blue Devils while Mike Fowler led the Tigers with 17. Starters: Gold Sand 88 Epsom 85 ?vans 11 ? Fowler 17 R. Edwards 19 ? The Epsom boys placed Jerry Patterson on first string All-Conference. Gold Sand boys won the con solation game trophy and placed Mike Lovln and Ricky Edwards on the second All Conference team. Rose Strickland was named to the second team, All-Conference from Gold Sand. Edward Best Boys and Frankllnton girls hauled down the coveted Sportsmanship trophy. Kay Watson was named second team All-Con ference and Tommy Cooke was named to the first team All Conference. Edward Best placed Cathy Gilliam and Phy llis Murray oh the second team All-Conference In addition to the sportsmanship award re ceived by the boys. For the first time In sev eral years, neither the boys or girls from Louis burg par ticipated In the awards.
