Franklinton Scouts End Camporee Camp Pocomoke bald Its 1967 sum mar camp last week, June 28-30. It was the 4th annual aummar camp planned and operated by Boy Scout Troop 530 of Franklinton. At tending the camp were Earl Peoples, A1 Conyers, Edward Kearney, Chuck Julian, Toby Edwards, Nat Sandllng, Gene Waiden, Tyke Edwards, and Tommy Piper. Each morning after "Reveille" the boys partici pated In flag raising and tower building. Meals were cooked and served outdoors by camp cooks Cliff Williams and Everette Frye while camp activities were carried out under the full-time leadership of Assistant Scoutmaster Ray Hlght and the part-time direc tion of other later-mentioned community volunteers. After lunch the boys were given an hour of free time during which they could play basketball, hike to the store at Pocomoke, or Just rest. Later In the afternoon each day, the boys were allowed to practlve archery and mark manshlp. A period was also provided In the afternoon for bathing. The evening activities began after supper with services in the camp chapel after which the flag was lowered. Other evening activities consisted of timed 50-yard dashes, basketball, and night hikes. Each day was concluded with the sound of "Taps." Gulley who treated the boys to hot dogs, hamburgers, Ice cream, drinks, strawberries and cake. , The climax of the camp was the Thursday night campflre program at which prizes and awards were presented to the boys who excelled In various activities during the week. Archery prises went to Earl Peoples, A1 Conyers, and Nat Sandllng while marksmanship prizes went to Chuck Julian and Tommy Piper. The win ners of awards were as fol lows: Archer-Earl Peoples; Marksmanship-Chuck Julian; Pioneering - Toby Edwards; Athletics-Tommy Piper; Best Camper- A1 Conyers; and Best Behaved- Edward Kearney. Friday afternoon brought the closing of camp as packs and other equipment were thrown Into cars. Each boy returned home with experiences that he will remember for many years. Birth (Frk. She presented her demonstration, "I'm Living In A Pink Dream," In com petition with seven other counties. She won a trip to State Club Week July 24-28 where she will compete (or state honors. She Is the daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Harris of Route 2, Spring Hope, N. C. Byron Harris, also of the Justice Club, was first runner-up In the district In the Wildlife division. He has done much work , In the 4-H program. Tony Gupton of the Wood Club received a blue ribbon In Public Speaking and Nancy Carr of Frahkllnton received a blue ribbon for her piano solo. Linda Parrlsh re ceived a red ribbon for a Fruit and Vegetable Usage Demonstration and Randy Thomas received a white one In Electricity. Margaret Jones of Center vllle was the voting delegate for the county. Mrs. Bernlce S. Harris, Assistant Home Economics Extension Agent, and Mr. James D. Stephenson, Assistant Agricultural Exten sion Agent went with the group. 4-H leaders, Mrs. Lewis Neal of Centervllle, Mrs. Elaine Harris and Mrs. Alease Harris of Justice, and Mrs. Carr of Frankllnton assisted the 4-H'ers and agents during the day. Other club members to attend were Sandra Harris and Dan Harris of Justice and Paula Gupton of Wood. Charlena Sneed, 4-H club member of Concord Com munity 4-H Clubs captured district honors during Dis trict Demonstration Day held at Cary High School, Cary, North Carolina on Thursday June 29th. The title of her demonstration was " Eggs are What's Happening." The dem onstrated was presented In the Egg Cookery division. She emphasized the need of In cluding more eggs In the Dally Diet. Charlena Is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Isaiah Sneed and has been a 4-H club member for eight years. She was gran ted a scholarship to attend 4-H Club Week at N. C. State University. Wayman Williams and Her sey Carroll were declared District Alternate winners in Fruit and Vegetable Pro duction Demonstration.
