The news that "Bones" McKinney is to be the new manager
of the Carolina Cougars, the first professional sports team ever
to locate in the Old North State, is heartening. Basketball fans
will be pleased that "Bones" is coming back. He always was
one of the most colorful figures around. His return could help
the Cougars succeed in their home cities of Raleigh, Greens
boro and Charlotte.
There was one report that Press Maravich would get the job
with the assurance that his All-American son would come
along. with the deal following graduation next year. This, too,
would have been a fine move on the part of owner, Jim
Gardner.
The Cougars will have their work cut out for them in
competiting with Big Four basketball for the fan's dollar.
However, North Carolina has always been a sports minded area
and chances are the Cougars will be able to make a living here.
Louisburg's popular golfer and former Town Councilman
Louis Wheless, Jr. won the Wake Forejit Jaycees Invitational
Golf Tournament Sunday in an unusual sudden-death playoff.
Wheless holed-out on the play-off green by light supplied by a
pick-up truck. He was tied after 36 holes by Jimmy Gurkin, a
senior at Campbell College. Beginning the final hole at nearly
seven o'clock, Wheless' tee shot hit Mike Fletcher of Henders
on who had gone on ahead to watch for the balls. The ball
bounced 50 yards into a practice fairway. Wheless made an
outstanding three-iron shot landing the ball on the front of the
green. Taking two putts, he finished with a par four while
Gurkin bogied the hole;,
With the money being offered Lew Alcindor by the
Competing NBA and ABA, most fathers will be wishing their
sons would piay basketball instead of becoming President.
Actually, the offers border on the ridiculous. Alcindor will be
a drawing card, to be sure, but offers in the millions of dollars
is too much. Soo, too, are offers being made to 0. J. Simpso#
and others who have excelled at one sport or another. No one
can blame the players, however, because they must get what
they can. They could break a leg and for some other reason
not be able to play out a full career. They obviously figure
they better get while the getting is good.
Easter holidays will eliminate any prep baseball Friday. The
squads will resume the diamond wars next Wednesday. The
schedule calls for Wakelon to be at Louisburg; Bunn to travel
to Oxford Orphanage; Youngiville to go to Vance County and
Franklinton will have an open date.
Next Monday, Duke Jayvees will play the College Hurri
canes here.

It was his first experience
as a shop assistant. "Have you

"No!" was the reply, "but

stood. "A lady of no account
to see you, sir." he said.

College Golfers Beat Mt. Olive
Tuesday was Louisburg's
day at the Southern Wayne
course beating Mount Olive
315 to 371. Southern
Wayne's Country Club was
the site of this match, and the
host pro was Gene Semaske,
formerly at Louisburg. It's a
new course and has a flat,
?andy lay-out. The greens are
very big and the whoiepourse
is wide open and very fair for
the average golfer. Also it has
enough challenge so that the
good golfer will face plenty
of trouble if he takes to much
for granted.
Dave Stamper led the way
with a 74. followed by
Klingle's 79. Leadbetter had a
round of 38-42 for an 80;
'Green a 42-40; Radford a
40-42; and Hege a 40-44.
Stamper played consis
tently taking medalist honors
with rounds of 37-37 over the
par 35-36 course. Dave, who
plays out of Wilson Country
Club, is playing the best and
most consistent golf on the
team. He shoots between
72-76 and there are high
hopes of a sub-par round be
Bunn Drops
Louisburg
Brothers John and Robert
Wheless pitched and batted
Bunn to a lopsided 12-4
triumph over Louisburg Tues
day afternoon in a Franklin
County baseball encounter.
John hurled' 2 1/3 innings
of shutout ball in relief of
starter Darrell Hagwood
John also had two hits and
two runs batted in along with
a stolen base.
Brother Robert drove in
three runs with a triple and
stole two bases. The win was
the second of the season for

fore competitive play is over
this season. Not far behind
Dave came Klingle. Jay play
ed another great round of
golf and is the most improved
golfer on the team. He has
been playing the number 6
position, but in his last two
matches, he has been right in
there with the best of them.
The past two matches have
indicated that the team has
very good balance. All the
players have not differed but
a stroke or two in their scores
each time. Louisburg. how
ever. has not plnyeil up to its
potential yet. The top four
should all shoot in the 70's
but only one or two have
done so each match. AU
matches so far have been
away, and so there should be
high scores. The boys have
been playing the Louisburg
course (Green Hills) very
welL and when the home
matches start, scores should
be lowered quite a bit. Louis
burg now stands 2-0 in con
ference play with their next
match at Ferrum.

"Yes, two," was the reply.
"I'm sorry," said the tiny

children with parents.
They're so noisy and destruc
