Participation In USDA Food Program Increases Atlanta, Ga. - U. S. De partment of Agriculture food programs aided 236,154 needy persons in North Caro lina during February, 11,031 persons more than the num ber that received food assistance in January. U SDA's Consumer and Meeting Service said that 62,839 persons in 33 counties took part in its food stamp program and received $439,499 in bonus coupons. C&MS' family food distri bution program aided 173,515 persons in 61 coun ties. The foods distributed had an estimated retail value of $1.9 million and included dairy products, canned and dried fruits and vegetables, canned meat or poultry, grain and cereal products, as well as other items such as peanut butter and scrambled egg mix. C&MS officials attributed the increased participation to a slack in seasonal employ ment and the addition of Catawba County into the food stamp program. In North Carolina, the food distribution program is administered by the North Carolina Department of Agri culture, and the food stamp program is administered by the North Carolina Board of Public Welfare, both in co operation with the Consumer and Marketing Service. Franklin had 2,624 per sons to participate in the food stamp program. He served as rec reation leader in his club for two years; served as a junior leader and assisted other club members in preparing record books, conducting projects and completing projects. During his 7 yean as a club member, he completed 25 projects and received honors in seven project areas. Hersey was secretary of his club for three years, treasurer for three years and now ser ving as vice president of the 4-H County Council.
