Norwood Returns After A Year In Vietnam Sgt. Willie L. Norwood. Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs W. L. Norwood of Areola and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs Ernest Ayscue of the Gold SGT NORWOOD J Sand Community, has return ed home after a year of duty with the U. S. Army in the Republic of Vietnam. Sgt. Norwood served with Company B., 2nd Battalion. 7th Cavalry of the lit Air Cavalry Division. He worked as an Infantry machine gun ner and squad leader with the 3rd platoon of B Company. The 21-year-old soldier re ceived several awards during his service with the 1st Air Cavalry Division. Among these are two Bronze Medals. One was for a year of meri torious service as an infantry sky trooper, and other with a "V" representing valor for volunteering to go into an enemy held position to rescue a fellow comrade who had been wounded and unable to hep.himself. Sgt. Norwood was pre sented two Purple Heart medals for wounds he re ceived in action, and an Army Commendation Medal with "V" emblem for giving first aid to wounded comrades. He also received the Air Medal for participating in over 27 air assaults into hostile enemy territory. The Warren County soldier saw action in two major op erations of 1968. He served with his .unit at Khe Sany in the relief of the Marines and later followed them Into a Shau Valley, a major supply route for the enemy. Sgt. Norwood and his company worked in the area between the Quang Tri Province and the city of Hue for a long period of time. After his ninth month there, Sgt. Nor wood made a move south with his unit about 45 miles northwest of Saigon, where he completed his year's ser vice. After a 30-day leave at home, Sgt. Norwood will be stationed at Fort Carson, Colo., where he will be an instructor until he completes his service with the U. S. Army.
