It's The Franklin Area Conference Now An old friend died last night after 42 years of excite ment, filled with fond me mories, death came painlessly and without a tear being shed. A last attempt to save some semblance of the old Franklin County League by Louisburg was also killed. The assassination came from one expected source and some unexpected ones. Franklintoir led the op position to a split Conference for basketball and when Ed ward Best and Bunn joined forces with the opposition, the old League was no more, I6A -SAVE YOUR TAPE GAME $( ( ( F?R YOU * * J EACH WEEK. By Clint Fuller Times Managing Editor in fact nor in spirit. Louisburg's Eric Morgan, who was elected President of the new Conference, propos ed a two division setup for the new group with the six schools under the Franklin County administrative unit forming one division and Franklinton, Apex, Cardinal Gibbons, Oxfojd Orphanage and Wakelon forming the other. Morgan's proposal, worked out with Louisburg basketball coach' Tommy Twitty, would have had each school crossover and play members of the other division at least one conference game. Fear of scheduling was ap parently the main reason for the defeat of the motion. Morgan cited distances be tween schools and the fact that schools could continue to schedule games with out side teams which bring in large gates as some reasons for his motion. J. C. O'Neal, Franklinton coach, and Wes Jackson, Franklinton Princi pal, attacked the motion say ipg that it would result in the same scheduling problems that had prompted expansion of the conference. It was known that Louisburg want ed to schedule Warrenton and Vance County, among others outside, the conference. All dates are filled with confer ence foes under the schedule as approved here Wednesday night. Youngsville was known to want to play Wake Forest, an oia rival. In the final vote, Louis burg, Gold Sand, Epsom and Youngsville voted in favor of the two-division league and six schools voted against It. In a companion motion, Louis burg and Gold Sand voted against a schedule which call ed for a full slate of confer ence games. The motion pass ed on an 8-2 vote and will take play through February 20 of next year. Vance County sent a re presentative to the meeting seeking inclusion in the con ference scheduling. Vance will become a 2- A school this fall and any games played against the Cougars will not count against or for the lea gue teams it was explained. In view of obvious dissatis faction by some representa tives at the decisions being made, Marvin Moss, of Bunn, outgoing President, postpon ed any action on plans for the conference basketball tourna ment to a later meeting. The only motion gaining unanimous approval of the ten schools represented at the meeting was a report from the name committee. All schools endorsed the recom mendation that the new con ference be named the Frank lin Area Conference. On a suggestion by O'Neal, the group voted to have an all conference team this year in baseball. In the future all-con ference teams will.be selected for basketball and football as in the past and for track and baseball with appropriate trophies being presented The final action in Wed nesday night's meeting was the election of officers for the coming year. The recom mendations of the nominat ing committee were unani mously approved and Eric Morgan, assistant principal at Louisburg, was named Presi dent, James Marshall, Princi pal at Gold Sand, was elected Vice President, Tommy Twitty, Louisburg Coach, was elected Treasurer and Mrs. Kay Phillips, Youngsville Girl's Coach, was reelected Secretary. The Jet Motor Speedway will give away a total purse of $3,500 this Friday night. May 16.
