Tu?vd?t A THu'i4?y bf?Mf AM Of P'?akl? Cim?I| Garden Time By M. E.Gardner May is a busy month in the flower, vegetable and fruit gardens. In our neigh borhood all plants have been growing real well but will slow down considerably un less we have rain real soon. Perennial grasses are becom ing dormant (turning brown) unless they have been water ed. Dahlias planted the latter part of May seem to perform better than earlier planted tubers. Be sure to have one good "eye" (growing point) on each tuber. If you are concerned about ants infesting your peony flowers, don't worry. They are only seeking a sweet substance secreted by the flowers. The planting of tender ve getables is in order in the lower Piedmont (5-8-69). and in the Coastal Plain. Wait until danger of frost has pass ed in the mountains. Set out tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, and sweet potatoes. Sow snapbeans, sweet corn, okra, squash and cucumbers. Canta loupes and watermelons may also be planted. Don't expect to have dis ease and insect-free apples, peaches or bunch grapes un less you protect the plants with suitable sprays to con trol the many pests attacking them. "All-purpose" pesti cides may be purchased to protect your peaches, plums and apples. They should be applied regularly and accord ing to instructions printed on the label. For bunch grapes. 1 would spray every two weeks with either Bordeaux mixture and Malathion; or Captan and Ma lathion Sevin may be substi tuted for Malathion in both cases. Plant such crops as elep hant ears, fancy-leaved cala diums. cannas, tuberoses, crinums and gladioli. The lat ter should be planted every two weeks for continuous bloom. Watch for chlorosis - in sufficient green color in leaves resulting in a mottled yellowish appearance. This condition is most likely to appear on the foliage of aza leas. rhododendron, roses and grasses. Sometimes other plants are also affected. The trouble is caused by an iron deficiency and may be corrected by spraying or sprinkling the plants with iron chelates. These materials can be purchased from your garden supply store and should be used according to instructions. If you have much chloro sis. have your soil tested. Soil that is too alkaline (sweet) will tie up the iron and make it unavailable to the plant. SPECIAL! cosco BRIDGE SET TABLE and FOUR CHAIRS $2495 QUALITY FURNITURE CQ. S.
