If they have been dug and divided at least once in the last three yean, you may wish to leave them alone for another year of blooming. If you lift the bulbi every year, theyshould be stored in a cool dry place. Keep your tomato plants tied to the stakes as they grow. Use pieces of torn ciotb or soft string and do not tie the stems too tightly against the stake. Prune by removing the young shoots as they form in the axils of the leaves (where the leaf stems join the Tnain stem). Keep well mulched with pine needles or clean grain straw and water as needed. Don't expect too much from your plants if they are growing in your backyard where they may be shaded and competing with tree roots for moisture and nu trients. They prefer full sun. Watch carefully for lace bugs on pyrecantha, azalea. Washington hawthorne, rhododendron, etc. Dust thoroughly, especially under sides of leaves, with five per cent malathion dust. The same treatment will control spider mites (red spiders) and aphids (plant lice) on roses, azalea* and many other ornamentals. The know-how is less im portant than the do-it-now. From the national capital, which would be the starting point of an automobile drive, one can drive we*t to the (tart of the southerly tour on one of three road*.' The super highway is 66, going through Arlington and out by Manassas National Park and on to Front Royal. But the super highway is not yet completed and several lesser roads must be utilized \ from Manassas on. A bit further to the north, one can take route 50 almost to the Shenandoah River ? turning south just before crossing and on into Front Royal. Or, one can take an even more southerly route, out super highway 29 all the way to the rolling hone country at Warrenton, then on 211 and 522. back up to Front Royal. * j. Unless you are traveling on a dual highway, any of these drives will' take longer than expected for the roads in this hilly country are not what one might desire. But they are^orth the time, for the country is some of the most picturesque in the nation. Front Royal is where the ride down the Shenandoah begins. Shenandoah National Park extends for some sixty miles to the southwest, end ing near Waynesboro and just a short distance from historic Charlottesville. One can drive down the center of the na tional park for a time and turn westward to the Luray and on to New Market in the Shenandoah Valley. At New Market one is on the magnfficent super high way 81, which he can follow down to Harrisonburg, Staunton and Roanoke. This beautiful mountain dual-lane can be followed on through and west of the Appalachians into eastern Tennessee. It is good route into South Caro lina, if one's destination is there or Florida.
