I Distaff I Deeds I: By Janice R. Christ ersen ^Blenders Can "Do Your Thing" ?: Many Durham County :Tio me makers are aware of the ^numerous jobs a blender can ^perform. For example, at a ? "Small Equipment Work >:shop" sponsored by the Agri cultural Extension Service, : the women learned to make ^confectionary sugar from ' granulated sugar.By pouring a small amount of plain sugar in the blender and processing at a high speed for about two minutes, confectionary sugar can be the end product. The women also discover ed that a simplified method of chopping vegetables in the blender can eliminate a lot of clean-up. This method: fill the blender container about half full of water, cut the vegetable into one-inch pieces, regulate to switch to "on and off" positions quick ly, and pour into a colander to drain leaving hardly a trace of the chopped vegetable in the blender container. Mrs. Mary J. Whitmore, assistant home economics Ex tension agent, believes that if the homemaker learns to use her standard blender effec tively, she would not have to invest in a more expensive, deluxe model. Showing Your Age No need to show your age, believes Mrs. Jo Simpson of Onslow County. Hard work can keep you young. According to Mrs. Mary R. Howell, assistant home economics Extension agent, Mrs. Simpson, an active mem ber of the Back Swamp Ex tension Homemakers Club, sells her produce twice week ly at the Onslow County Curb Market. She not only sells the produce, she plants, cares for and gathers the vege tables, the agent notes. And Mrs. Simpson is 80 years young. Where There's a Will "Where there's a will there's a way" was never truer than in the Silver Valley Community of Davidson County, believes Mrs. Martha B. Thompson, home econo mics Extension agent. For the members of the Silver Valley Extension Homemakers Club took on a mammoth job as a communi ty service. The Silver Valley School needed a new stage drop cur tain before commencement but costs were greater than the budget. Shopping around in all sorts of unlikely places, the Extension Homemakers Club members found a large roll of pure linen drapery fabric in a bargain center. They bought 100 yardi at the bargain price of a dollar a yard and started sewing. The following cases were disposed of in District Court Monday, June 23rd: Walter Sidney Murray, w/m/55, operating auto in toxicated. $100.00 fine and costs and not drive a motor vehicle on public highways of N. With some financial help from the local PTA, the women finished the backdrop complete with eyelets and weights and put it up. Mrs. Thompson adds that the stage looked "just right" for commencement exercises. Enthused Over Sewing Since her husband bought her a sewing machine, Mrs. Charles Timmons, a Scotland County homemaker, has add ed many garments to her wardrobe and her daughter's wardrobe. In addition to having more variety in the family ward robes. Mrs. Timmons is con vinced she is saving her hus band money by being a do-it -yourselfer. Mrs. Ann M.
