Fabric by David St Dash Local Ladies On Canadian Tour k By Elizabeth Johnson, Editor The eastern coastline of North America is something to behold. And the northern shoreline is so different from that of North Carolina and neighboring states. Well, to catch you up with me, Mrs. Genevieve Perry, Miss Lucy P. Burt, Miss Ade laide Johnson and 1 joined a Trailways Tour bus In Hen derson early Saturday morn ing, July 19. for a tour of Nova Scotia. Prince Edward Island and Gaspe Peninsula, all in Canada. The first day took us to New York, a route that my readers know from having made visits along the way. So Sunday's travel took us the coastal route via Bridgeport, New Haven and Hartford, Conn, making a stop at Mystic, Convet, a seaport re constructed for preserving history. Then we followed the Massachusetts and Maine turnpikes to Portland, Maine for Sunday nights' stay. Traveling thru Maine, we noticed the change in the coastline. It became very rugged and irregular all the way to Bar Harbor on Mon day. While in Bar Harbor. Me., we had a sightseeing tour of the Acadian National Park, a combination of ocean and mountain scenery that makes the area one of the most enchanting spots of America. On Tuesday, we left Bar Harbor early for the 100-mile ferry across the Bay of Fundy to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. After going thru customs [ and mind you, whjn two bags of the 44 on our pus were picked for inspection, mine was one!]. We visited a woolen shop in Yarmouth and checked in our motel after a very long day. Wednesday >vas an event ful day. Leaving Yarmouth, we headed to Halifax, N. S., stopping at Annapolis Royal, famous for its early history and the first capital of Nova Scotia (1710 - 1749) seeing Fort Anne National Historic Park, a fort which was impor tant in early Canadian history and which overlooks the An napolis Basin, scene of many battles between French and the British from 1613 - 1690. On then thru the famous apple growing country we ar rived at Grand Pre which was the scene of expulsion of the Acadians frofn Nova Scotia in 1775 and was immortalized by Longfellow's poem "Evan geline." Late In the evening we arrived it Halifax, the capital city of the province. Halifax was celebrating its 220th birthday and the city was crowded. At night there were fireworks and street dancing. During the day all kinds of cbmpetitive sports had taken place, we were told. Thursday morning we had a guided tour of Halifax, a city of about 205,000, I be lieve we were told. They had just recently taken into the city outlying area of a 10 mile radious. In the afternoon we traveled rugged coastline northeast through Truro to New Glasgow for the night. In this section of Nova Scotia, we observed lots of building, both of housing commercial buildings and . roads. It seems to be boom ing. Today, Friday, July 25, has been a day to remember. Leaving New Glasgow we have traveled the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton.- Nova Scotia to the north and around the northwestern shore of the isr land to Margaree Porks for the night. We climbed moun tains and had the Atlantic Ocean just below us and asv far as we could see. The coastline was very rugged and irregular. All along the way we saw piles of lobster traps and evidence of the traps set in the ocean. Also we have seen in this section large piles of pulp wood ready to be shipped out. The countryside is beauti ful. (To be cont.) Youngsville Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Under wood and children, Rob, Greg and Cora, have moved from Atlanta, Georgia back to their home in Youngsville. Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Godwin and daughter have now moved to their new residence near the Meadow High School, Route two, Benson, N. C.
