Franklin "{Continued from Page 1) mileage Including urban streets. Wake leads with 1,316.45; followed by Orange with 632.73, Franklin with 609.47 and Durham with 606.78. Orange with its 45,300 population Is nearer the class of Wake and Durham than of Franklin. In its poli tics, Orange Is far removed from Franklin. Chapel Hill, one might remember went for Dr. Reginald Haw kins in last year's Democratic Primary. Franklin give Mel Broughton a slight edge In May but Scott led Jim Gardner by over a thousand votes last Novem ber here. The new slignment Includes not only the state capital-a fact that many contribute to Franklin's being left out of appropriations in the past-but the highly favored Research Triangle area. The Triangle lies in the heart of the three other counties in the new group. Without commenting on the new alignment, The Chapel Hill Weekly has taken Chairman Fairdoth to task in Wednesday's edition. Editorially, The Weekly says Faircloth "has spelled out generally what he hope* to achieve over the next four yean with that $1.6 billion at hit command. To nobody'* great surprise, certainly not ours, the missing Chapel Hill leg of the Chapel Hill-Raleigh Expressway was not men tioned, even in passing." The Weekly continued, "Mr. Fair cloth thinks his new Commission < ought to concentrate on improving and upgrading the State's East-West road system." The Weekly goes on to list a number of major projects it expects to gain priority. It makes it obvious that the newspaper has mis givings with the new highway setup. In the interview thsis month, pub lished in WE, THE PEOPLE, Faircloth was asked; "What do you expjet the main thrust of highway construction to come during, the next four years?" He answered: "We intend to put the major emphasis on the improve ment of the primary and urban feeder ?P1 highway system. That Is where the big need llw, and that'* what we're going to work on." It has been reliably reported that Franklin's new Commissioner Cliff Benson would like to see improve meats made to NC-56 both east and west and to see NC-39 completed to the Vance line. One source, connected with the Commission, said a few weeks ago that Franklin could expect More road funds in the days ahead than it had received in years. Speaking before the Joint Finance Committee back in June, Faircloth said, "Recently 1 was asked to speak in Franklin County and when I started looking into the county's road history. I found they have not had a primary road project in 19 years. Certainly some consideration should be given a county that has been neglected that long." WE couldn't agree more with the Chairman. , District Court Handles Heavy Docket The following cues were disposed of in District Court Monday, July 28th: Mrs. Emily .
