just naturally go together . . .
and this Christmas, velvet
dresses are the going thing (or
party bound girls of all sizes
and ages
With grown-up looks and
grownup ideas prevailing ip
children's wear, the generation
gap has narrowed in fashions.
As a result, what's party fair
for big sister is ditto for little,
sister, too. ' "
Cotton velvets and velve
teens touched with lace are big
in both categories. In some,
the velvet y look goes demure
with high necked dresses char
acterized by pleated lace col
lars and long puff y sleeves. In
others, the look is more sophis
ticated with simple styling set
off by gold body chains that
reflect the warm velvet color
ings.
Shapes with closer-to-the
body fit include dropped
waists, simple A lines, and nat
ural waists that are belted,
sashed or bowed.
Even the pantsuit look for
party time is carried over into
little girls' hoUday styles. Here,
however, the age difference is
reflected in the styling. Pant
suits for the very young retain
a more feminine mood with
wide lace duffs on straight leg
ged pants that match the cov
ering dress.

Do it with Mexican inspired
tree ornaments in the charm
ing folk art tradition . . . orna
ments you can make yourself
from bright colored cotton fab
rics cut in simple animal
shapes. For added color, trim
them with lively zigzags of
cotton rick rack and fringe.
No sewing is required for
these easy to-make tree trims,
reports the National Cotton
Council.
To give body to the orna
ments. use heavyweight non
woven interfacing between
front and back of the fabric
designs. Cut two 6x7-inch rec
tangles of cotton fabric and
one of interfacing to form a
base for the designs.
Join fabric and interfacing
together with a new iron-on
product ? a web of fibers on
transfer paper that fuses ma
terials together with the aid
of a steam iron.
Then trace an animal shape
on the fabric base and cut out.
Simple outlines of birds, owls,
lambs, fish, or Mexican burros
are most effective.
Glue appropriate rick rack
trims to the animal shapes,
making Identical designs on
both sides of each ornament.
Use sequins for eyes.
For example, an ornament
in the shape of the traditional
Mexican stone bird can be cut
from bright red cotton. Out
line the bird's tall and wings
with black baby rick rack. Add
rows of white baby rick rack
on the wings and tail for con
trast. Glue one point of rick
rack on each side of the bird's
beak, and black sequins for
eyes
Make hang loops for the or
naments from four strands of
cotton thread In the same
color as the fabric.

To form the basic seven
petaled flower, start by cut
ting a 5x10 inch rectangle from
each fabric These are to be
glued together? print side out

However, to make the petals
flexible, place strips of flo
rist's wire ? allowing one strip
for each petal? between the
fabric layers at 1 ' < inch Inter
vals before gluing. Make the
wire strips about seven Inches
long so they will overhang the
rectangle and can be used to
attach the flower to the stem.
Next glue the 5-lnch sides of
the rectangle together to form
a cylinder Then snip out petal
shapes, cutting so that each
wire strip Is in the center of a
petal
Make flower centers from
cotton ball fringe pompons

Tape the completed center
to a stem made from heavy
florist's wire or a coathanger
