Conservation has been a tradition in the Hiclu family for many generations. A por tion of their neat, comfort able. home was built in 1735. This tradition of preserving buildings has spread over to the conservation of the land. Alfred Cooper, his wife, Ann, and two daughters. Phyllis and Sue, live in the Aventon Community in the northern part of Nash County. Alfred and his brother, Fred, jointly own an 800 acre farm on which they produce both crops and livestock. Most of the open land on the farm has moderate or steep slopes and needs inten sive conservation treatment to protect it from erosion. Alfred became a coopera tor with the Soil and Water Conservation District in 1947 and each year since that time has established some conser vation practice on the farm. A beef herd of approxi mately 60 brood cows has been developed %o utilize some of the land in perma nent pasture. Hicks has also been one of the pioneers in minimum till age and sod planting in Nash County. Planting in a narrow furrow and treating with chemicals to control grass and weeds is one of the leading conservation practices in re ducing soil losses. Most of the farm is now fenced, allowing full use of the fields for field gleanings and winter grazing! One uni que feature of the Hicks farm is that each fence line -ihrough the woods has a strip 10-15 feet wije^clearetf ad jacent to the fence. The strip serves the dual purpose of providing a fireland and im proving accessibility for main taining fences. Terraces and grassed waterways are now establish ed on most of the cropland along with a conservation cropping system. Woodland also is receiving attention as put ?tttaelong. range conservation program on the farm. Thirty-five acres of cutover woodlands has been treated and planted to loblolly pine seedlings. Alfred Cooper's interest in conservation is not limited to the boundaries of the Hick Statue To Prop Tower Bromley, England - Bri tish architect Peter Hammond has suggested that Italy could save the leaning tower of Pisa by building a huge statue alongside to hold it up. The statue should be of the man responsible for the tilt In the first place, William of Inns bruck, an architect, according to Hammond. farm. As Chairman of the Nash County ASCS Commit tee. he has help guide the use. of funds provided the oounty to get as much permanent type conservation as possible. All members of the Hicks family are active members of the York's Chapel Methodist Church. The lessons learned at church and Sunday School' about being good stewards may account for much of the conservation program on the ( Hicks farm today . The Conservation Farmer [ of the Year in Nash County is recognized annually, by the Nash Soil and Water Conser vation District. The selection is made by the Ave members of the N'aldi Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors. -The Nash ville Graphic. Fred and Alfred Cooper are sons of Mrs. F. W. Hicks, Sr. and the late Mr. Hicks, formerly of Louisburg and the grandsons of the late Mr. and Mrs. L. P. Hicks of Louis burg.
