The Result, It is amusing to note the teTerish anxiety exhibited by the 1 Democratic press a9 the time tor the Baltimore Con vention approaches.. That they are to stake their all on its action and after that action abide zealously by its choice, is self-evident. 1 - Could a more despicable-, procedure be witnessed ? A party large in its ar ray of deep thinkiDg and pseudo-patriotic leaders, pledging themselves and their constituents to a man and princi ples so utterly at variance with their previous political creed. Greeleyism may be a " new depart ure," acceptable to these long-suffering and do vu -trodden Machiavelian?, and the golden' sunrise of their millenium may already seem to tint the Eastern clouds, aud fat offices, unlimited power, aud Bourbon aristocracy reinstated throughout their country. But never was a greater mistake. These are the leaders. A What of the people ? As a generality, following ri gidly the public exponents of their creed; mere waifs on the sea of politics. We prophesy that when the storm y$ J heights arc scaled, they will look back over the troublesome way and view there the hopes of long years of waiting scattered in the mire. While that few, the venturesome band of captains, who so blatently (bade them follow, turn against them, and bid them home till they need their aid again. This will be the inevitably result, and the pangs of defeat will in all probab-; ity be added to those of deeper degraV dation; the. kuowledge that the well laid plans, and principles falsely as sumed, have retaliated with crushing force on the sources from whence they came. K Scylla to Chary bdis." i The present attitude ot th Demo-' cratic party, is a forcible exemplffica-1 - - tionof the inelegant, butt t to-r "iyortMn a atorm.w; f ? : pf- ; L L'iHeroble atrtje o.h tta little fil' 3, anfei lei torn trotr4oihe dl llMc&k tt!i fTertflded pfot Lism,4xtfo W hoitlliollo were theiractions. Siding with few unprincipled," disappointed office-seekers, they attire to support and establish a policy "mi nous in its every phase. The official actions of Gen. Grajtt hare been in the mainfacceptable to the have occurfnTerjff administration since that of WaahiDgton ; and It is the dutj ot a Wiae government to correct tbcw mutates as iteoiectS." President Grajtt may hare been led, through un wise' Inflttericea, to -give Ills' sanction to seemingly unjust acts ; hut his prompt and just action repudiating the abuse 1 cannot but be admired. Should Horace Greeley become President of the United States, an event not' in tiifit' least probable, the South would .particularly feel the pernicious influences' of his administration. What a grand field for political experiment, would be afforded the learned Db. He would treat it as a rare exotic ; fertilize with exploded doctrines, irri gate with theoretical profoundities, and one by one lop off the social and politi cal branches already acquired, and giving golden promises of a perfect future. When he has watered, manured, and pruned this beautiful tree of equal liberty, to bis heart's content, it will be found the bare and barren stalk of $5. , . Gen, Grant's present and past policy has been one thoroughly on the side of justice to all, North and South, i He was an honorable foe and is now a no less honorable ruler. During his com ing term the South may-hope for a per manent settlement of the pending ques tions before Congress. Amnesty par ticularly. A settlement that will prove acceptable Id them in every respect. We call .upon the honest portions of the democracy who have blindly fol lowed thtir leaders through their vicis situdes during the . past decade, to beware of ' the labjrinthian , reef that threatens th, em from the other side, and carefully reflect before casting their ballots as1 their old leaders dictate. The Democratic Legislature gere -mandered this State to enable tbem to cyu-fjUaAmaDj Congressional Districts as possible". Adhere jrcas a very large Republican majority :in the -eastern portion of the' State, they succeeded in working in a long string of strong Re publican Counties, and called it the Second District. The candidates are Judge TnoMAs and -Capt. Kitcheic, and the latter gentlemen, i with no more chance of his being elected than he has ot being struck by Jightniigi5 promises the colored people of that district, to donate to their-schools three thousand dollars of his salary if elected. . Now this is decidedly Aithiri." Let us hear from some of the Democratic candi dates, - where there is a chance of an election, and see if they will make the same Qffer. --We don't expect any such promises, we frankly admit. Those, like. Cumulative Suffrage are only adopted where there are Republican ma- joriues; The Magnolia Monitor a very heavy sheet, is out with some more blood and thunder. The editor is "hunkey" on quotations. He quotes as follows: "Thrice armed is he, who is armed with truth." Now that's pretty good. Here's one more quotation from that highly intelligent sheet : One of the sneaking, villainous scoun drels, who was a participant in this transaction, claims to be a Southerner and a North Carolinian at that, who has so far departed irom principle and molality, and sunk so low in the scales ot infamy and vice, that only in shape and form is he an equal to any animal in the brute creation. . j Hough on the Children.' A prominent Sunday School paper tells its readers, tctat nre to ten. that they must give up the use of tobacc'5, or they will have amaurosis, angina pectc ris, hypochondriasis, and locomotorat axy. Those scholars who did not die while acquiring the orthoepy of these dire consequential damages, have quit chewing and smoking. The Great Joker in Payetteville Tance Attacked by Guthrie and Badly Damaged. t ! t;f FAYKTTB VILLJC, Ni C. ) June 25th, 1872. ( Evexikg Post :-f To day the Impe rial Joker and politician of North Car olina,: Ex-Go7. Z. B, Vance, (by previ ous appointment,) met a large crowd of Conservatives in this place. . The Gov ernor spoke for two and one-half hours, and was replied to by Wm. A. Guthrie, Esq., in about the same time, with each, a short rejoinder. Gov.' Vance's speech like all his ef forts, was replete with wit and oratbry, at least, it was as good as his effoita usuajly are, but in no wise an improve ment on hisf speeches of ten years ago. Vance's fort is in the application oi some witty, anecdote or, fci&HZna' a were in no wise no it was simply the same old hash served to tue fcpple fo years ago and which hat becosie so $taU that only &' JUtleHv spice in ittp way hi wit renders it t&il pataUblsBut the' Governor's arrangements for a clean nceep and general fun over of all Re publicans was thwarted most . success fully by our.young and talented Gutbrxej When: it vfaaf .whispereoT AveftJhs; ihat Liitle Guthrie was to re- crowd p!ja. general supply, of JndignjitioaB curled on the lips ot the fait, hluL Tne idea of the "boy" Guthrie replying to the Giant Vance I : t jfi But pluck and talent combined, are valuable characteristics, ; Right yalient iy did the little lawyer ply, his lash and sorely did the thick hide ot the Joker feel it. . I have heard many Democrats express their opinion that Guthrie "surprised them." Gov. Vance himself expressed himself in his rejoinder that it was "an abler Republican speech than he was accustomed to hear," and he found it necessary to drag heavy with his net, tarecover his ground. I am sorry I cannot report the speeches of each, at least, in part, but space and time forbids. The Republican party of Cumberland has lost nothing by this big effort of the Democrats to overawe Us with their biggest gun All honor to the, coming young man of the Cape Fear. - Cumberland. A North Carolina Greeleyite, presiding over a county convention the other day, expressed the opinion that " treason is the crime of a gentleman after all." And then he went on to speak about the "gentility" and the "moral dignitj" of the Southern traitors. The Providence Journal intimates that, in its opinion, "an outside delegate to a bolting conference from an unau thorized convention that represents no bodv but its . own members,: and not much more than half of them," must be a very lonesome individual.
