Judge Merrimou and hi3 friends told the people ot this State in 1868 that every vote for our present Constitution was a vote for negro, supremacy. Was their assertion true ? Who told the people of Wake last summer that it the Convention was voted down they would have to pay fifty dol lars tax on every thousand dollars' worth of property. Answer--JuJge Merrimon. It is urged by the Democratic organs that the law is, to be enforced in State and municipal elections. This is done to make it more obnoxious, if . that be possible, to their party., But unfortu nately this is an error. The taw applies only to Presidential and Congressional elections, tuougu we heartily wish it COULD BE MADE TO APPLY TO ALL OTH ERS. V. 7. Tribune. When the rebellious Traitors are over whelmed in the Field, and scattered like leaves before ! an angry wind, it must not be to return to Peaceful qqd Contented Homes. Do not forget that while there is no National Democratic : party, there is a State Democratic . party, complete in its organization and working , day and night for ' success ! "Are WBiuffiiciently aware of our danger $ -r Shall we be de ceived with all the rigmarole' of' Demo cratic charges of fraud and corruption; charges iproyed false over: ' and over again, - but 3 'still i reiterated STvithtbe same earnestness ? We hope not '.XeJt bur f nend3 be wide awake, and labor hard, and ' the 'victory will ' again . be ours. Every man must Regreter. Let committees be appointed in every Township.and a thorough Canvass made to sto that every man is Registered. Prepare lists and see that eyery regis tered vote is polled. ifave committees at the polls to see that every man has the right ticket and deposits it in the proper box. Our enemies are vigilant and have surrounded the i election' laws with so many technicalities that it will require the most scrupulous care"to pref vent mistakes. See that the election committees are thoroughly posted and at their posts all With these pre cautions and Mr vigilant eye on the ene my, they will be defeated. ' Congressman Beck Branded. ' We have already published a thor ough airing of Congressman Beck's charge against the Republicans of North! Carolina, but the Northern papers come to us ladeued with such pungent com ments on that disredutable charge that we cannot refrain irom again publish ing a refutal ol the slander: Thi3 morning a. letter is , published I from Marshal Carrow to Hon. J. B. ; Beck, which disposes of that. falsehood. From this letter it appears Carrow has S drawn from the United States Treasuiy : during the last fifteen months $214,271, i all of which, except $6G,CG7 was drawn m 1871. In the same htteen months Car row has paid ou account of the expen ses of the Federal Courts in North Car olina $223,819 for Spring Term, Fall Term 5S72. FVery 'dollar drawn has ben certified by Hon. George W. Brooks, United States Judge for North Carolina, whose official conduct has never been buestioned. The large expenses of the court are due to largely increased busi ness, caused by the prosecution of the ku klux and the perpetrators of frauds upon internal revenue. In these cases,! besides prisoners, thousands of witness es have beeu transported to the place where the court was held, and sub sisted there by the gorernmeut,- a large proportion of tbem being in the inter-i est of prisoners ; Carrow says Beck knew of all these facts when he charged that money had been drawn from the United States Treasury to be used here, for election purposes, I may add that? there is a general complaint here among the Republicans that there is no money ior tne legitimate expenses connected with election, aud if Carrow had drawn any that complaint would not be heard Times. A grand Republican ratification meet ing was held at Portland, Maine, on Friday evening last. Dr. George B. Loring, of Massachusetts, was among the speakers, and in his remarks said : "The secret ot Grant's popularity was that he had protected every man in his ousiness all over the country, and it was the encouragement of labor that had caused the financial success of the Administration, There can be no des potism, or centralization of , power among a free people. Grant had al ways been faithful to every plank in the party platform, and meant that every Jjone&t man 6ball have a living and his vote counted.". Gen. Sherman has a way of putting things so as to make his points Very clear.! For instance, a World corres pondent has ju3t interviewed j him at Geneva., and drawn him into politics a little. The General gave his views ot the "situation" very tersely, but he cov ered the ' whole ground. He said : "The Democrats are in a position of difficulty. They present, that , party which has the least frankly accepted the results of our civil war, and I do not believe any party so circumstanced in sympathies will, in our generation at if least, win Xhe confidence of a majority 1 of -our people. The war had to bel fought it was inevitable. Once over i we must all wish to see its members buried, but we cannot consent to have its work undone." The New 'York World rightly says that Mr. Greerey, if elected by Demo cratio ,c9, cao -Vpore tbo Demo cratic party in organizmg his adminia- l a. : T I 3 i: t. . - . nnuun.--; xaueeu uaa saia that he would not.,; How do the Republicans wuo have thought ot supporting him as a Republican like "this claim and ! this acknowledgment. Among the watering place arrivals we notice a 1 number of North ' Caroli ajans,,', who have slipped from us and are enjoying the delights of sea bathing, cool drives; : and relief froni busy care. The season at the ea side and at Sara toga, has so far been one of rare en joyment.' Boss Tweed's trial has at length begun. Stokes off . the docket, New York needs ; some excitement, and the trial of the Tammany frauds, gives to them the desired excitement. How it will t result is a matter of conjecture. Tweed, Sweeny & Co., deserve the utmost punishment of the law. We would liketoMbet that they go Scott free. The trottmg at Saratoga this season has been one ot surprise tc the regular hobitues of the turf. Horses that were sworn to win have been beaten. ' A shooting affray has ; occured in Egypt between Consul General George A. Butler, and Col. J. M. Reynolds, for merly of the Confederate service, and now in the service of the Khedive. From all we can learn both, parties' were equally to be blimed. Col. Reynolds was daugerously and it is believed fa tally wouudud. Political diflterences are supposed to be the cauie of the af fray.
