It was ''npossible for our reporter to bring a report of the races at the F.tir Ground to-day in time for pub1 cation. The "strangers bal" last night was a decided success, and the manage ment deserve great praise. It was a remarkably large and well dressed as sembly. The dancing was kept up un til an early hour this morning. A Him to the Working Man, A man with a family, however poor he may be, owes it to h;s wife to save her health and strength in everyway possible. He has no right, to al low the mother of his children to wear her l;fe out toiling with her needle to clothe her family. His duty is to buy the New Elias' Howe Sewing Machine, the best machine for family sewing ever invented, and he can buy one for sixty dollars. More than this, he can buy the Howe machine upon terms which ecable him to pay for it in small monthly installments, that he can pay out of his wagers without feeling the drain. He will get thereby a machine capable of doing every vari eto of family work in the most beauti ful manner, a machine that even a child can operate, and which will prove a permanent family .blessing. , W. P. Goodrich offers the celebrated Machine on New York torma and prices at his office on Market street, near 3rd Wilmington N. C. Chased Last night a negro man stole an overcoat from the store of Mr. S. Lew, on the corner of Market and Front streets, and as he was making off with his booty was discovered with it under his arm, and was 1 pursued by a crowd of volunteer officers until he got opposite the Clifford House, on Market street, when he preferred to tryjthemon fence jumping, as lie saw they were no where on a quarter mile heat. He succeeded in making good his escape, but during his run the coat was drop ped and restored to its owner. During the run, one of the crowd who was pur suing him snapped a pistol at the thief several times, but fortunately it did not go ofT. Had the pistol I discharged ' we would in all probability had to report the wounding or killing of some pedes trian on the opposite side of the street. I -Taken In. A. Mr. MeKav. nfrw, berland county, was victimized by a coupl(f of swindlers yesterday, in a Water street bar, to the tunc of $20. Mr. McKay says the men had a tobacco pouch which they wanted to bet any body in the house that he could not open. Mr. McKay, for some reason, opened his pocket book, when the men pulled the money out quickly, and han ded it to the barkeeper to hold. The tobacco box men claimed that they had won the bet, and the money was hand ed over to them. Mr. McKay followed them out, hoping to lind an officer, but before he had gotten fir the bar keeper sent for him to' come back, which he did. The swindlers got ofr with the money, and Mr. Mc Kay thinks it was a put up job between the bartender and the black legs. A warrant was issued by the Mayor for the men, and also the bar tender as a jar(ic-:f8 o i'mhiii. The case will be investigated on Monday, and until then we will suppress the bar kecpei's name, as we do not wish to do him ;m injury. Housing the U. S.
