of the Air Force Base as the planes
that roar from its runways. And
in keeping with the Air Force
theme, local smoke - eaters of Sey
mour Johnson are on call 24 hours
a day.
A deadly and serious business
like firefighting calls for top talent
and the latest ii^ equipment,
Finally set in their new home the
64 military ,and civilian fire
specialists find their work demand

In keeping with Air Force policy
of good community relations, the
Base Fire Department has a

Fire prevention inspection Is one
of the major phases in all fire de
partments. “Fire fighting is a poor
substitute for fire prevention. In
fighting a, fire you merely hope to
reduce the inevitable loss, ” stated
chief Stevenson. “Fire prevention
costs a great deal of time, talent
and painstaking labor, but is in
finitely cheaper than the human
misery and material damage of
just'one fire,’’ the Chief added.
Firemen In the Air Force receive

Since the Air Force has not only
ordinary fires to contend with
there is the always present danger
of fire in an aircraft. When this
occurs, special equipment, built to
Air Force specifications, Is Im
mediately on the scene. Most
commonly used in aircraft fires is
a foam truck which sprays a foamy
substance on the fire and- com
pletely smothers a gasoline or .jet
fuel fed fire. The Air Force also
uses conventional trucks, the
