A deadly and serious business like firefighting calls for top talent and the latest ii^ equipment, Finally set in their new home the 64 military ,and civilian fire specialists find their work demand ing and rugged. Directed by Fire Chief Lonnie Stevenson the fire fighters’ main concern is fire pre vention and education. Fire alarm facilities, including two way radios and fire reporting telephones, are manned constantly Lf. Sandford Heads Food Service Unit First Lieutenant Roth Sanford is the commander of the 83rd Food Service Squadron at Seymour John son Air Force -Base. Lt. Sanford stepped Into this position when he was transferred to Goldsboro from , Kadena AF 3ase in Okinawa last November. He was squadron adjutant at Ka dena. He Is a native of Detroit, Mich. After he tt’as graduated . from from Wayne University School of Business Administration, June, 1954, with a B. S. degree, he was, commissioned from the R.O.T.C. into active duty in September, 1954. He was first stationed at War ren AFB in Wyoming, where he at tended A.F. Supply School. Lt. Sanford was born in Detroit, Dec. 13, 1931. He is Jewish. He is' unmarried. He was a memh^er of the Alpha Epsilon Pi and the Tau Epsilon Rho fraternities at Wayne University. Capt. McAnulty Has Command Capt. James Patrick McAnulty of Palmyra, N. J., commands the headquarters squadron Action of the Air Base Group at Seymour Johnson AFB. He first served in the United States Army from 1945 to 1946. Later he went to Villanova Col lege and entered the Air Force cadet corp in 1949. After gradua tion as a ^ilot he served in Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Florida and Panama. ' He is married to the fomer Annam Strohlein of Riverton, N.J. They have three children. by qualified fire fighters who are always ready to respond to any fjxe alert — either aircraft or structural. In keeping with Air Force policy of good community relations, the Base Fire Department has a mutual aid agreement with com munities adjacent to the base for aid during firefighting operations. Fire prevention inspection Is one of the major phases in all fire de partments. “Fire fighting is a poor substitute for fire prevention. In fighting a, fire you merely hope to reduce the inevitable loss, ” stated chief Stevenson. “Fire prevention costs a great deal of time, talent and painstaking labor, but is in finitely cheaper than the human misery and material damage of just'one fire,’’ the Chief added. Firemen In the Air Force receive special training at Lowry Air Force Base, Denver, Colo., before assigned to a- base. The training they receive, however, doesn’t end with graduation from school.
