Greenland last July, M-Sgt. Edwin Alexander, 31st Air Trans port Sq. at Dover was awarded the Soldier’s Medal. The rescue took place beside a C-124 which earlier had carried Alexander and Dawson from Dov> er. Both men were assisting In the refueling of the plane, sched uled to leave Thule later in the morning. Alexander, standing beside the fuel hose and nozzle attachment beneath the craft, was watching the hose connection. Dawson was at the flight engineer's panel inside the plane. Suddenly the nozzle attachment dropped from the fuel tank access. Gasoline cascaded out of the hose and onto the apron, thoroughly drenching Alexander’s clothes. He ran to one side of a huge pool of gasoline formed on the field. It spread quickly, and coming in contact with the field refueling . unit, it burst into a roaring infei^no. Money for the purchase of a site and construction of a runway, hangar and other facilities came through the sale of old barracks at the base. The barracks were given the city by the Civil Aeronautics Administration with the stipulation that they w'ould be sold and the money used for the construction .and-maintenance of a new municl- paT airport. Some $51,000 was realized from 'the sale and after careful study a site was selected about six miles west of the city limits and just nbrth of U. S. 70. The site was pur chased in November 1953 from H. T. Lane for $10,500. , Contract for the construction of a runway 300 feet wide and 2,500 feet long was let in 1954 under a con tract of about $11,000 and construc tion of the runway was completed early in 195^. Heavy rains which accompahled Hurricane Hazel in October 1955 caused a delay In final approval of the field by CAA. Repairs to the runway, addition al drainage, grading of the hangar site, parking area and an entrance road were completed late last year at a cost of approximately $5,000. Contract for construction of a prefabricated hangar was let late last summer but construction-“trSs- help up by the steel shortage. The hangar, a 60 by 80 foot structure, was completed last month at a cost of $21,000, practically exhaust ing what was left of the $51,000, which was set aside for airport construction. I Negotiation for an operator for' the airport were completed the: first of this month and on April 1, the Board of Aldermen approved a contract leasing the airport and its facilities to Rocky Mount Air Service.
