In April last I wasar-csted while plow ing in my field, upon a warrant issued upon the oath of Mary Ann Norville, whose true name is Uaiusay, a daughtei of Aaron Biggerstaff. Iiwas bound over to appear at Uuthcrfordtci before Judge Logan, when it was known the Judge would be absent, holding coart. I al teuded and the clerk 'bound uie over to appear before Judge Logan on the 10. h of July. 1 was then arretted by detect ive Boshcr and a squad ol U. S. soldiers ind biotight to Raleigh 'and lodged in jail. I could have givin bail at home, but was not allowed to, AVhcn I reach ed this city, Judge Boiul required $2,000 bail. I olfeied a bond figned by the best and wealthiest men in Cleavcland couuty. This Judge Bond refused to take, aud I went to jail for a week for want of bail. It was the best service you could have rendered us. The iiighiBiggei staff was whipped, I was on a visit with my wile and family to jny brother-in-law, William C. Dcpiicst. Depriest and his son were .11 rested for kukluxing Biggeistalf. Until they had louud out (hat 1 was announced ns a wit ness to prove them at home, 1 was not arrested or charged by the Bijjgeistnffs with kukluxing. 1 am sure I was arrested to deprive D priest and hid son of my ev idence. William Depriest and his sou are now convicted of kukluxing BiggerstafV w hen I could have proven them at liouu , lor while Biggerstatf was being whipped, I stood in the poich with the Deprii sts and my wife listening to the noise, which was some mile or more distant. There was not a particle of evidence to convict me of kukluxing Biggerstaff, or any 0111 er person, and now that my blood is up I defy the prosecutors to produce any. The worst of this whole matter is, 1-havo no redress. It is the court and the offi cers of the court who are turned into po litical persecutors. If 1 had been a re publican I would never have been indict ed. Those who have wronged me are not worth suing, or I would seek redress in that v ay. j Mine has been political persecution. Business men are disposed to regard it as a very fortunate and advantageous move for the. material interests of that section of the Slate througlj which th'n road passes, while the private stnekholdf is, so far as we have heanjl, are rejoicing over the fact that their siojk has materially increased in value already. The politicians, however, look upon the lease of this Road as the ruin of the Slate, forgetting that the material welfare of the couutry does "not always depend upon the mere tlevatio 1 of some one of a half dozen politicians tu the presidency of a State Railroad. At present the matter aseumrg this s'lape: A great public woik, meant to beneiit the Jieople.i.f a large portion ol North Carolina, has passed from under the bam ful ii.fluejices of party, into the hands of a corporation of business men, whose object is to make money, and to that end they must affoid ample public accommodation, and add great improve ments to tbj road, while that gieat bal ance power, public opinion, must be so wielded thai no harm shall result fiom ibis to any if the other public or private interests ot he State. The cardjof President Smith fully ex plains the jease, and states the limtivea that iiiHnented the action of the authori ties in the matter. We are, with the pre sent lights before u, inclined to reg'ard the base in a very favorable Iightand shall expect much from the new manage incut. Sorth Carolinian. - Some of j the radicals are proposing an increase in the salary of President Oram, and think tli.it he ought to have one hun dred thousand dollars a year. All of our Presidents, heretofore got along on twenty-five thousand dollars a -year, and some of them saved money on it. We know that a majority of our farmers, who an as good as President Grant, would have to work twenty years or more, before ihey could realize twenty-five thousand cVlars. As to President Giant, he went into of fice quite poor, and now he is a wealthy man. How he managed to pile up i idl es, we do not care to explain at present, but his present salary is enough lor him or for any President. Salem Press.
