We have spoken of the English candidates at Woolwich passing an examination in English literature. Would it not be well if our students at West Poiut were taught something besides the manual of arms ? A short course ot constitutional law would have been a benefit to Sheridan and Grant, and even to the bellicose Belknap, who, we presume, was also a graduate at West Poiut. Prospectus for 1875 E i g h t h Tear THE ALDINE, THE ART JOURNAL OF AMERICA, Issued SSonthly. 'A Maga fiocnl CuneerUon Wonderfully carried out. The necessity of a popular medium for the representation of the productions of our great artists, has alwav been recognised, and many at temps have been made to meet the want. The ftiioceflsive failures which so iuvairabl v followed each attempt in this country to establish an art journal, did not prove the indifference of the people or America to t lie claims ot high art So soon as a proper appreciation ol the want and an ability to meet it were shown, the public al once rallied with enthusiasm to its support, and the result was a great artistic and commer cial triumph llih AJjJJlJiJi. THE ALD1XE, while issued wilh all the regularity, has none of the temporary or timelit interest characteristic of ordinary periodicals It ia an elegant miscellany of pure, light, and graceful literature; and a collection of picture, the rarest specimens of artistic skill, in black and white. Although each succeeding number affords a fresh pleasure to its friends, the real value and beauty of THE ALD1SE will be most appreciate)) after it is bound up at the close of the year. While other publications may claim superior cheapness, as competed with rivals of a similar clan, THE A LUIS A' is iiniuueand original conception alone and un approached absolutely without competition in price or character. 1 lie possessor of u complete volume can nut duplicate the quantity of tine paper anu engravings in any oilier siiape or . number of volumes jar ten Uincs it eosf . uad tin n, there ts the ehrorno, besidet. Thus, while placing before the patrons of THE ALDINE, as a lending characteristic, the productions of the moftt noted American artists, attention will al ways be given to specimens irotu foreign mas ters, giving subscribers all the pleasure and Instruction obtainable from home or foreign sources. The artistic illustration of American scenery, original with THE ALDINE, is an important leature, and its msgninceni plates are ot a sise more appropriate to the satisfactory treatment of details than can be afforded by any inferior page. The judicious interspersion of landscape, marine, figure, and animal subjects, suatain an unabated interest, impossible where toe scope of the work confines tne artist too closely to a single nt vie of subject. The literature of THE ALDINE is a light and graceful accompani ment, worthy of the artistic features, with only such technical disquisitions as do not interfere with the popular interest of the work.
