The Christmas tree business is just now
blooming in Maine. The tree arc now leav
inj the State daily in carloads, numbering
.wi.T.Vit's; ant! as the supply dwindles the
business encroaches more upon the immense
spruce and fir forests of Maine. One of the
supply is at Warren, and there are firms in
the State who make it an immense busi
ness. It is a great sacrifice of valuable tim
ber, but the public will have them even at
the cost of ten thousands of valuable grow

Among the enterprises of Franklin is
the manufacture of the Greenwood Ear pro
tector. Some five years ago Chester A.
Greenwood, Yankee like, found that his
ears Mtinfully sensitive to our winter north
westers, and-instcad of deserting the
land f his nativity, he set himself to
work in devising a protector. The machin
ery for its manufacture he invented and
made himself, and he made and introduced
into the market enough to secure public
favor. The business has grown, and this
year his brother E. Greenwood, is in com
pany with him, the firm being Chester
A. Greenwood & Co. They have fitted up
a two story shop, having made all new; ma
chinery for the different operations eight
teen being used. The machinery is driven by
an engine of three horse power. They are
manufacturing 50.000 pairs for this years
trade, making 1000 a dajv employing ten
hands,mostly females, in the shop, and some
six or eight out f the shop. Mr. Green
wood has his invention patented in this
