. Mrs. BeulahSHinn died last
Monday night at' her home on
Buffalo street. She was the wife
of Mr, Shinn, o the firm of
Hopkins & Shinn, and a half sis
ter of Mr, Will Jerome. She leaves
an infant two Weeks old, and two
other children. Th body was in-
terred at Bethel graveyard m No.
10 township.
The carpenters, are now busy at
work putting in shape the store
room next to Ritchie Hardware
Co., to be occupied by the Ivey I
Shoe Co.
Hall Taylor was badly cut " in
the face Monday night. He says
he was walking on Depot street,
and when front of Rev. G. H.
Comelison's two men held him up
and demanded his money. When
he refused to give it up, he says,
they cut him. Taylor came up
street and had his wounds attend
ed by Dr. Smoot and Pemberton.
He is badly cut. There seems to
be more or less mystery about the
case.
There was a general fight Wed
nesday nisht among the colored
males and females at a home on
Depot street just below the old
Coleman store. . The wholo neigh
borhood was disturbed. The ne
groes had a dance, which broke
ud in a row, of course. Lon Smith
was badly cut up by his wife
negro named Moss hit Lou Bost
on the head with a stone, and
pretty badly hurt him.
rrot. J. Jfi. Martin, tne in
structor in pugilism, who runs a
joint in the old Coleman store ; on
Depot street, is now bording with
Jailer Robinson, It has been sus
pected for some time that he has
been selling wnisKey nere, ana a
true bill was found against him
in two cases. He was arrested on
a capias by Sheriff Harris last
Tuesday night, who fixed his bond
at $300. This Martin has not
been able to give, and is still in
jail. It seems to be pretty well
established that this is a very pro
nounced case of blind tiger.
The death of Dr. Charles Barn
hardt, briefly announced in our
last issue, was an event which cast
gloom over a
whole community.
His death occurred at his home in
Mt. Pleasant Tuesday morning at
8 o'clock after an illness of only a
few days of pneumonia. Dr. Barn
hardt was sick for several days
before he took his bed, and on
the day beforehe was confined he
attended a patient s bedside all
day when hiB own temperature
was 105. This circumstance shows
the man he was unselfish always
and to the end.
At tne recent meeting oi tne
Yorke Furniture Co. held to con
fer about rebuilding the plant,
the following resolution was unan-
imously adopted : Resolved, That
the directors do issue additional
stock to the amount of $15,000.00,
the subscriber to have the option
of taking common stock at 50
cents on the dollar or preferred
stock at par value of $100 per

of the Rebekahs success would
have been doubtful. The meeting
was opened with stirring music by
the Chesthut Hill Band, which
also made music often and well
during the evening. P. S. Carl-

quent address of welcome, and
various subjects of interest to the
Order were ably discussed by Revs.

Short talks were also made by
Samuel R. Harrison and W. M.
Barker, both Odd Fellowslor more
than half a century. A supper
consisting of oysters, fruits, cakes,
etc, W8S spread in the armory ad-
joining ana servea oy tne laaies,
to which all were invited. After
supper and just before closing Rev.
J. H. J. Farrington, in a few beau
tiful and appropriate remarks,
presented to Mrs. G. O. Kluttz, a
member of the Rebekahs, with a
handsome emblem-ring, she hav
ing won same by bringing in more
new members than any one else
during a specified time, This
meeting was one of the best at-
tended most enjoyed and of more
benefit to the Order than any sim

Salisbury for years. Visitors
from many adioining cities were
in attendance.

between Salisbury and Spencer,
Mrs. Augusta Bulloch, wife of the

case was never taken to court, but

DUNN'S MOUNTAIN NEWS ITEMS.
Bartlette Makes "a Suggestion and Allows
Some Ideas to Escape.
Dunn's Mountain, Feb. 5. At
last the weather has moderated,
the heavy sleet-ice gone and a
good portion of the peach trees
are scattered over the ground.
Guess there will be more than
likely a short crop of peaches
through this section.
Luther Miller and sister, Pearl,
visited their grandfather and yours
truly . We all enjoyed their visit.
Come again.
There seems to be some confu
sion at and around Mulertown.
Uncle Josh has come into our
ranks to supply us with the news
and Betsy has revived again. We
are glad to hear from both, but it
seems that if Betsy would write
fromRitchfield she would be giving
her section a place in our paper
(The Watchman). We would
suggest as a compromise that
Betsy- report the Richfield news
and Uncle Josh the Millertown.
We know Bro. Josh and believe
he will do. justice to himself as
well as the Watchman. Send
'em along Josh.

It seems strange that Bro. -L

always ready and willing to divide
our best boxes (beds) 'and our
scant grub (breakfast) with our
ever welcome and congenial guests.
Verily our lot is a hard one. How
ever we are content to accept what
this world has in store for us and
not do much kicking our selves.
What about it Bro. Lee.
Miss Mollie Kesler has gone on
a visit to her sister Mrs. . Pierce
Leonard.
Jno. Leonard killed a porker
which weighed near. 200,000 lbs.
Well some of the naughts don't
mean lbs but the above is as near
as we could guess its weight, as it
was a very heavy hog. j
Miss Esther Cauble has been un
able to attend school for a few
days past on account ot a very
sore throat.
We guess the ground hog knows
his business, anyway, according to
the old saying, he has decided to
take up his abode for another six
weeks.
As news is scarce and gossip too
we think for this time this will
do. Bartlette.
The County Board of Education
held a meeting last week. The
union of the school in district No.
z witn anotner public scnooi in
Mt. Ulla township, was discussed.
The patrons of these schools ask
that an election may be held to
vote a special tax to raise means
for putting up a modern school
building costing $1000. The
board will pay $500 toward this.
It is expected the election will' be
held next spring.
Send for it.

D. V. J. Peeler Robbed.
About 2 o'clock Thursday morn
ing, D. V. J. Peeler, who came to
Salisbury seversl years ago from
Gold Hill, was awakened to find
a man standing in the door of his
bed-room. The intruder held a
lighted match in one hand and a
large pistol in the other. He was
of medium build and hid hifl faftA
by means of a mask and his hat.
Mr. JPeeler admits thatf he was
somewhat p frightened, gave a yell
and suddenly arose, but the thief
made his escape at a back win
dow, through which he entered.
Mr. Peeler found that a rear room
had been thoroughly ransacked
and that $26 had been taken out
of his pocket. Mr. Peeler re
