For the first time in the life of
the Jamestown'Exposition, Direc
tor General A. H. Martin has
made public the Exposition's at
tendance figures, his statement
shows a total of 2,198,173 ad
missions from April 26th, the
opening date, up to and including
September 30th.
Dr. and Mrs. D. S. Rowland,
on trial last week, in Raleigh, on
the charge of poisoning Mrs.
Rowland's former husband, Chas.
R. Strange, were released from
custody at 2 : 30 Sunday morning
on the return of a verdict by the
jury that they were "not guilty,"
Governor Glenn declares that
there are' ghosts in either the
executive office or that of his
private secretary. There" is a call
bell at his desk so that he can
notify the private secretary or
messenger thatthey are wanted,
and this bell rings when no one is
at the Governor's desk or even in
his room. He says that it is moBt
unaccountable and that no one
has been able to assign any reason

The survey will soon be com
plete through Yadkin county, and
the engineers are well pleased with
the road. They say thatit will

that the grade is a good one. The
road will enter the county at a
point not far from Lone Hickory
and is surveyed to run about 300
yards west of the court house and
a short distance east of Bocnville,
thus splitting the county half in

Asheville voted the saloons out
of business Tuesday. The cam
paign was of the strenuous order,
and the prohibitionists worked
with a determination that boded
victory. The majority was large
and decisive, and the enthusiasm
over the result was a notable
feature with the workers. Shadows
begin to fall across Salisbury's
horizon, and the saloon forces
freely predict a temperance victory
there not loug hence. Stanly

The Carolina Valley railway has
been graded toward Tbomasville
for quite-a distance and the con
tractors are carrying the work
without a break. It is said that
the heaviest work between High
Point and Thomasville has been
finished. This is new the most
interesting railroad construction
going on in this part of the State.
People still talk about the South
bound occasionally, and all agree
that it would boom Lexington,
but there is "nothing doing" Lex
ington Dispatch.
Judge Pritchard, who has been
appealed to by the State for
permission to examine the books
of the Southern Railway Co., prior
to June 80th, 1905, refuses to
grant the request.
According to a report made by
Mrs. John P. Allison, of Concord,
made to the recent State conven
tion of the Daughters of the Con
federacy North Carolina made
the second largest contribution to
the Jefferson Davis monument re
cently unveiled in Richmond.
Grover Cleveland is quite ill
with acute indigestion. He is
said to be a mere shadow of his
former self.
Cassie Chadwick, who figured
so conspicuously several years
ago in some great fiinancial trans
actions and who was sentenced to
a term of ten years in the peniten
tiary, died in prison last Thursday.

A Child Dies Suddenly.
Lelia Jordan, the 6-year-old
daughter of U. F. Jordan, fell on
the street Thursday afternoon be
tween 1 and 2 o'clock, while on
her way home from school, She
was picked up and carried into
the home of Be M. Miller, reBtora-
tives were administered and a
physician sent for, but she died;movefl away to send Jlis repu
in a very snort time. . She was a
delicate child and her death was
most likely the result of heart
disease. Her remains were taken
to Mr. Jordan's former home in
Davie county interment Friday.
Locke Freeze Looses His Hone.
Locke Freeze, who occupied the
old Robt. Carter home in Franklin
township, a few miles from Salis
bury, mourns the loss of all his
household effects. While the fam
ily was away from home on Sun
day afternoon the house, with its
contents were destroyed by fire.
The origin of the fire is not known.
Henry A. Trexler had only re
cently purchased the place and
the loss of the house will fall upon
him.
