The other day an English speaking Chinese stu dent from Canton, but a native of this city, called upon me. He was fairly well dressed in foreign style. I asked him if the people stared much and he said no, but hundreds croweded round to 'look see" when he and his brother from Japan took! their sisters out for a walk. In fact they were so much annoyed by the crowds "that they appealed, not very successfully, to the po lice. Fashions are changing in other repects also. There is a move ment on foot now to establish an athletic club for members of the various schools and colleges. When we arrived it was late in the afternoon, and soon after, in the stillness of the evening hour, we heard hundreds of children's voices singing a weird sort of chant, which on inquiry turned out to be a patriotio song being taught by officially appointed teachers in the schools cloBe by. .South China Post. Judge Council Hickory Democrat Nov. ath. t - ' Last Saturday morning early stories began to circulate as to robbery in West Hickory. Sifted down, the following facts were brought out : Some person or persons attempted to enter the homes of Messra. J. S. Leonard and Setzer. They broke into the residence)! Mrs. Porter, and Miss Mattie Porter was awakened by a oloth soaked in some anaesthetic being thrown over her face. -They saw no one. All tne doors to tne house were open. At Mr. Summey Propsts' the robber took his trousers out of the bed-room into the parlor and stole all the money in the pockets, about $7.00. The supposition is that the thief went on from here to New ton. There an effort was made to enter the home of Mrs. Dave Barringer. - She 'phoned to Chief J. L. Goforth, who came at once. To quiet Mrs. Barringer's fright he left his revolver- with her, and having found the man's tract, followed it to the home of Mr. Bob Huitt. The burglar started out oi tne Kitcnin. as ne saw Mr. Goforth, he fired, but missed The chief, armed only with his billy, attacked the thief, who fired at close range, the ball strik ing Mr. Goforth in the stomach. The burglar ran, escaping before help came. Mr. Goforth was car ried into Mr. Pink Holbrook's where he liesQin a desperate con aition, miss Annie uuitt was found to be dazed from the ef feet of some drug, probably the same used in Miss Porter's case. Mr. Goforth has been a snlen M. did officer, and is universally likod and respected in Newton. The state of publio opinion in re gard to bis opponent through-out the county is and which would render it a bad business for any one even suspected. Threats of vengeance have freely been made. It iB hoped that' our people will control their juifc anger. It is a terrible thing, enough, to madden any man, to reflect that a law abiding citizen cannot lie down at night without risk of life and property by such miscreants as this. While identification is not pos itive, it is known that the man was a negro. Judge Council continues to im prove, and can walk about in the house. We trust he will soon be out again.
