He aroso this morning at his usual hour and at brcaktast served to the members of the family, most of whom were present. He appeared to be in his usual health and in a more than usually happy frame of mind. At 9:30 he had his customary morning consultation with his sons and his private secretary, ile went to the studio of the sculptor, J. About noon he returned home, where he partook 01 luncheon. At 1 o'clock Mr. Robert Garrett, the president of the Baltimore and Olgo railroad, went to Mr. Vanderbilt, greeted him cordially and engaged in a long and animated conversation with him about railroad matters. The conference lasted more than an hour. The two railroad magnates were discussing the new terminal facilities of the Baltimore & Ohio. Mr. Vanderbilt took a lively interest in the results that were to follow for the island of his l-iith from the new enterprise. It was while the talk turned upon this, the scenes 01 his childhood and early work, contrast ed with tho tremendous achieve ments of his ripe old. ago, that Mr. Garrett, sitting on a sofa and raeing thet millionaire who leaned forward in his arm chair, as was his habit W.
