In the future we will endeavor to publish a good fam ily paper, giving all the important current news of u political and mis cellaneous nature both at home and abroad. The local department will receive due attention, and the col umns t, the Press will be made as interesting as possible for all classes. Willi our steam presses we hre enabled to execute work at short notice, and our Job Department is complete in every respect to do first class work, upon the- most reason able terms. Our printing office was established in 1827. And wo tender our thanks for the liberal support heretofore received, hoping to merit not. only h continuance of the same, but an increased patronage. We wish all our frionds and cus tomers a happy and prosperous New Year. . We expected to give our read ers a list of the new buildings and imnrovements in Salem and Win- stori, but failed to obtain informa tion irom the contractors and build ers in time ior this issue. Will do so if possible next week. The mad-dog bitten children of Newark, N. J., have arrived in Par is, and been successfully inoculated by. Pasteur. Hon. Jas. W. Reid. Tho following complimentary no tice of Hon. James W. Reid is by s Washington correspondent: "Mr Jteid has acquired considerable in flneneo in the departments and personally popular among the mem bers with whom he served in the 48th Congress for a short while. A gentleman from his district, while alluding lo rivalries in the district, was disposed to think that Reid could bold his own4anywhere. It is said that be has his father's popu larity, and l hat the difference be tween the father and son is about this: Dr.- Reid s mind was analytical and J. W. Heid's is poetical, sympa thetic.' We arc glad to know thai Mr. Reid's popularity is not confined to his own Male, lie is a true North Carolinian, and 4to the manor orn." The people know him and trust him. Reporter and Post. Unless the New York World is incorrectly nd.Ued tho general gov ernment has already adopted for coast and harbor defense an engine of war which, if all that is claimed for it be true, will effectnelly relieve the apprehension that our sea coast cities might be bombarded with enc incase of war by fleets of foreign ironclads with perfect safety to the latter. The contrivance is tho Sims' electrical fish torpedo. With a range of two miles, it can bo fired, pro pelled and steered from shoro or from a vessel, can dive under float ing spars, cut through ropes, des scribe a circle in a 200 feel area, go off at a. iy angle, in short can be controlled completely. It carries a charge of 400 pounds of dynamite. Delinquent County Treasurers. The law makes November 30th the close of the school 'fiscal year and requires the county treasurers to make immediate, report to the State Superintendent of receipts and disbursements of school funds. The penalty for delay in complying with this requirement is severe, and ought to bo, because it involves do lay in the Superintendent's report. It is now tho 22d of December and sixteen treasurers have not reported. Why this delay I do not know, but it is to be hoped that this complaint will not only cause tho delinquent treasurers to forward their reports at once, but will prevent delay in the future. S. M. Finger. Supt. Public Instruction. The twenty-three men and boys imprisoned in tho coal mine, near 'Nanlicoke, Pa., are beyond all hu man help, and are believed to be dead. Mad dogs are said to be snap ping at peoplo in tho crowded streets of New York and its populous sub urbs, and in three cities in the neigh borhood, Newark, Passaic and Ilo boken, systematic efforts, under offi cial auspices, have been made to protect the streets. The will of Wm. II.-Yanderbilt makes Jay Gould the richest man in America. By dividing tho vast estate among many heirs, tho share of no one of them will probably equal that of Jay Gould. Last Tuesday afternoon a fatal collision of freight, trains occurred on the Western North Carolina Railroad, resulting in the death of one engineer and two firomen, and the probably fatal injury of another engineer. Northern Farmers Prospecting in Virginia. A staff correspondent of the New York Star writes from Richmond, Va.: " On the cars coming from Washington a party of western New lorK iarmers were met who were on a prospecting lour, seeking new homes in Virginia, lhey said tho winters of Northwestern New York were driving them to a more equa ble climate, and most of them bore tho suro marks of consumption. Along the Virginia and North Car olina boundary there are extensive colonies of Northern settlers, and they are reported as prosperous and contented. In the party each had some relative or friend already set tied here. I here was one family. man, wite and three children, with all their household goods from the extreme northern part of New York, who spoke of tho three feet of snow they had escaped from, and at the dinner station they left tho. train and were met by some friends who had already settled near the place. They seemed to be as happy as tho genia sunshine which gave them an Olc Virginia welcome.
