A stranger to olTr institutions reading in a New York daily that the President of the United States had lieen visited by leading )oliti i.ians of the Radical jiersuasion for tlie purpose of ascertaining hi views mid feelings in regard to the pres ent politieal vauipaigu in North Ca rolina, would very naturally siipjxBe that the issue involved wore such as affected the interests of the whole country. . The reader would doubtless bo lunch sm prised to learn that the people ; of the sovereigu; .State of North Carolina were engaged in ad justing and discussing certain mat-; ters mi rely of a local or statue char acter, and in .which the general federal, or as we must now call it, National Coiverninent had no- con cevn wh.ttever. The question would naturally arise iu the mind of such stranger. Whv doe's the: President nn noil me that he feels a "deep iu terest'' iu the success ofa certain coalition of politicians formed for the piTiosc of changing the system of county government. and prevent -ing the democrats from; forcing a prohibition bill imi the people of North Carolina. It would occur to him that some terrible Wrong was being done' the eople of this State, and that so manifest and glaring was the evil that the great Execu tive head of the Nation was moved to throw his great pwwer into the balance, and thus preserve the old State from ruin. Again he would lie surprised when told that the jh-o-ple were propcrous and happy, that taxes were low, justice administer ed to all, clinic almost unknown the rights of all respected,' the pub" ijcrevenueU l.ouestlv collated and accounted lor. education' and gener al improvement making rapid strides and the 1400;)'i, white ineu of the Sf.ate the owners of the soil, the intelligence and I test sentiment of the State iu cont rol, were struggling to maintain the present status, and in Wis snipri-e he would cry out. why' I his 4eai nest -dcs.il e'' of the President- lor the change who wants the change and the answer would conic 1 ().", ;0 negroe ' ' and about 10,0oo white, ineii consisting largely of Revenue officers and dis- . apjMtiiited )Mliticiaiis of the demo cratic party, and the stranger would wr.nder at thee American Presi d. nts and their mode of governing the couiiti v. What has the Presi dent of the' 1'nited States to do with tle question of county goveru- I inent in North Carolina f Whv . - do iMiliticians rush to Washington to - consult him These to' us are se rious quesiious. when the time comes that the President of the United SUtc piKtitutes his office to the business of carrying ou c paigus, involving purely State af fairs then we may ; well apprehend danger to our lilieities. Now does the President exjiecf to influence voteraiu North Ganjiua f . By ar gument and re.isou surely not, but by the use of federal patronage and money. Men of North '.'Carolina" it is yours to see roit that you are not led astray and corrupted by such means. Wheu you vote at the dictation ofthe President of the United States and his hirelings you are traitors toyour jtoliticai mother. Be North Caioliuiaus first, and re member that assticli it is your first duty to condemn and denounce this attempt of a lederal administration to dictate to you. It is a little si u g lar too that the Mime editors in the NmT who think it exceedingly p.errn the Ihesideut to control elect ions iu North Ci-roliuaare crying out against -federal interference" in their own State. Gousisteucy this federal interference iu State .elections is the most dangerous ele ment in our politic and the iieople of this St ate cau render 'no better service tins year than by teaching the powers at YV ashiugtou a lesson lk-it ttieT w rill not soou forget 1 J V . (VraiHeer. Kso- of Kiuston refuses to allow his name to be used in connection with -the Senatorial onniinatioii in the district composed of Greene and Lenoir. This insures the nomination of that old war horse of democracy. Col. R. C. D. Beanion. Every day prerMMits us with some new evidence of the growing weak ness or the liberal party. That its leaders are on the verge of despair , is apparent from their loss of dis icretion, and indifference to what j they nay or do. Chairman Cocke hau been betraved into the iudis- cretion of issuing an address to the i voters of the Asheville district, in which he alludes to the Republican party as "the late Republican par tv." This has aroused the ire ofthe editor of the North State, a leading Republican paper, who goes for him after this manner. "Just think, says he, '-this is the leader of the coalition which all Re publicans are ordered to support. "The late Republican party The man who says this, is the leader of the1 movement which is held in erro rem over the Republican, office holders of, the State. Mr. Cocke, the manager of the literal party has now given over hi own signa ture, the true designs of the coali tion between the so-called literal democrats, and the Revenue Ring. It amounts to nothing more than a democratic movement, t;o bury for ever the Republican party in North Carolina. This is the feast to which we are invited by the Itepublicans, who claim to te builduig up the Re publican party iu this State. Au in vitation to the "Wake" of the Re publican party would seem! more like it." The above seutimenfs of the "North State" are reachoed by such leading Republicans as Judges Dick and Reade, lion, W. A. Smith of Johnston, ex-Governor Brogden and others. From all parts of the State the news comes ; that the Republi can party is growing weary of car rying thin "old-man of the Sea" upon its shoulders, and is making what haste it can to unload him. An open rupture between the com bined forces against the democracy is at hand. The party which was ushered into existence in this State, a few short months ago with such flourish of trumiiets is "growing small by degrees and beautifully less." Its staudartl-beaiers, who rushed to the front, and planted its banners so exultingly in our faces, are all, except the few who are can didates for office, retiring from the lield. Capt. Price and Gen. Ieach, who were the especial champions of the literal movement, have iniitat- ed the example of that King of France, referred to bvShakesjH'are, , who j "With twice ten thousand men Marched un the hill and then 1 march dowu again." j Gen. The above is the heading of a no tice which we see itosted af the Court House in Wilson, calling a eonventiou of the colored voters, to take into consideration the late "en dorsement", by the white republican "bowses," of the . independents, whom Col.
